Description
LAST UPDATE: December 8th, 2024 (see "change notes" for specific changes)

Vet Strat Recycler Variant (VSR) introduces 1.2-style physics (hovering/flying enabled, less "heavy-feeling," much more air control), gameplay balance adjustments, the Hadean race (faction) from FE, and nearly 150 expertly-made maps on many different worlds that are Strategy, MPI, and ST Capture capable (see below for more information)!

VSR is built for competitive gameplay for experienced players, but everyone is welcome. Build your skills to be one of the best! If you played ZST back in 1.2, welcome back! This mod is for you! The current "vet" players are using VSR. Yes, we are still here!

This mod contains 3 sub-variants:
  • VSR Standard does not include added technology for each race, except for the overall inclusion of the Hadean race. It generally features physics and balance improvements only to remain as close to the original (stock) game as possible. This is generally used for Team Strategy.
  • VSR Plus includes everything from "VSR Standard" but adds a few more units to each team (such as the Hammer from FE for ISDF, the Brawler from FE for Scions, and deadly "Smart Scouts"). "Plus" also allows you to undeploy your Recycler by using your Constructor to "upgrade" it.
  • VSR Experimental includes everything from "VSR Plus" but adds content such as satellite activation through the press of a button, buildable portals, and other content for a more unique and robust experience. The "Experimental" variant is generally used for testing and VSR MPI.

Major features of VSR:
  • Physics Changes: Hovering ("flying") is enabled in VSR. Hovering is an art that adds a whole new dynamic to gameplay, and it is utilized by the most experienced players in the game. Piloted units will also respond a little better to your inputs. VSR makes the game feel like the good old days (Battlezone II 1.2).
  • Balance Changes: You will find that more weapons, units, and tactics are more relevant in VSR. Weapons have been optimized for online gameplay to reduce laggy effects, and damage values have been tweaked to make them more practical. Many units have slightly modified armor or speed capabilities. Race tech trees have been adjusted to better match gameplay tactics and to create better balance between races.
  • New Maps: Including addon map packs, VSR contains nearly 150 unique maps. Maps with a "VSR:" prefix (almost 100 of them) are ST, MPI, and ST Capture capable! Go to "Map Options" to set it up.
  • Hadean race: ISDF, Scion, and now Hadeans! The Hadean Race is from the Forgotten Enemies mod and is in the process of being graphically updated.
  • Advanced MPI: High level "Multiplayer Instant" games are able to be toggled on for any map with a "VSR:" prefix so you and your friends can play against the computer. VSR MPI is the most advanced MPI experience BZCC has to offer!
  • FFA MPI: Allows a team of humans to face up to 5 enemy AI teams, or you can align some of the AI teams to yourself! You're going to need all the help you can get. Plans to improve this in the future will allow multiple teams of AI and humans to play against one another.
  • FFA alliance: Play free-for-all strategy alongside your strongest allies! VSR supports setting up of commanders and thugs (pilot) per team. The first player on a team gets command, all others are thugs/pilots.
  • Player rejoin method: You don't have to have your commander buy you a new ship if you disconnect! This option allows you to pick up right where you left off if you leave based on either your player name or team slot. If you get kicked, disconnected from, or otherwise leave a game, when you re-join, you resume in the same ship/location/status as when you left. This also means you can't rejoin just to get a new ship or sniper rifle.
  • Pilot/empty scout invulnerability: Sick of getting spawn-killed by mortar bikes or acid cloud archers? Now you can prevent spawn killing of pilots and empty scouts. The default setting is 15 seconds, but it can be changed to be anything between 0 and 120 seconds. Invulnerability ends upon entering the ship.
  • Center-face spawn: Units will spawn facing the center of the map for consistency.
  • Camera pods: This is an "observer" vehicle that is great for taking videos of in-game action. Camera pods are units that can morph to become completely invisible; they will not be attacked by AI. Press C to become invisible.
  • Recycler undeploy: Change your mind on your base location? You can un-deploy your Recycler in Plus and Experimental variants and move it to a new location.
  • Portals: Quickly traverse the map by building portals between points on the VSR Experimental variant! You can set up to 4 channels to have different portals going to different locations, or create a link from location to location. Tell your AI units to "go to" the portal to make them go through it. Careful, enemies can use it too!
  • Team Strategy Capture Mode: A brand new game mode! Capture locations around the map by getting close and targeting them. You will get perks for doing so, with more perks as you capture more locations! Capture all locations on the map to win the game.
  • Enhanced UI: Displays health bars for your Recycler, Factory, and Armory (on all VSR variants), and for your Satellite/Relay Bunker (Experimental variant only) right on your HUD. Also, your human teammates' names will appear under their F-keys.

    Balance adjustments and other modifications are voted on and approved by the active strategy community, not an individual person. Original concept and content for VSR by Zero_Angel, General BlackDragon, Vearie, and many others. Most of the conversion of VSR content from 1.3 to BZCC has been done by Feared_1 and General BlackDragon. Please do not use any converted VSR BZCC content without permission.

Is there any way to stop the AI in multiplayer from spawning with tons of units? The game is usually over within 2 minutes because they send several tanks and turrets within seconds.

Yes, that is possible! FFA MPI has been updated, however, to only have 5 enemy AI teams to make room for more players.

In the features list it is stated:

Is the "plans to improve..." part integrated? Meaning, is a match with multiple teams of AI and humans playing against each other, like stated, possible? I assume FFA MPI = every team is one human/ai player with a recycler. Sorry, didn't play Battlezone for a long time and wanted to jump in with a friend for some nice MP matches with AI. Thank you.

I was able to get it to work, I'm going to test it a bit more over time I think some FFA maps don't add ai but I'm not sure yet.

Does this mod work for multiple AI and Player commanders? my dad and I have always wanted this to work and we do the settings listed and no AI teams spawn

Apologies for the delay in my reply. I've tried multiple Instant Action maps with varying settings. Only one enemy recycler spawns with no AI. I also tried the steps you mentioned about MPI (I completely forgot this even existed!) and did get an enemy team to start, however none of the settings I chose actually applied.

The last game I tried was:
Player ISDF on team 1
CPU1 Scion on team 1 (allied to myself)
CPU2 Hadean on team 2
CPU3 Cerberi on team 3
VSR Level 1
VSR FFA map selected

Only one enemy team appeared and they were Scion, not friendly like I selected.
I'm at a bit of a loss as to what's going on. It's strange because a few weeks ago Instant Action was working perfectly, then one day recently it suddenly broke.
