Fighters remaining should prevent a defeat.
Unless there's an engine limitation that causes it not to be possible, a swarm of hundreds of fighters remaining after my Ton-Falks were destroyed should not be a defeat. I could have easily destroyed a half dozen more of their capital ships before my fighters were completely destroyed, but instead the operation was a complete failure because my hundreds of fighters were just instantly deleted five seconds after the last Ton-Falk blew up.

That is complete and utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

It would be terrible if a single fighter squadron prevents a battle from ending and you cannot set a certain amount required.

I don't really see the issue with it tbh. Just send a light ship or your fighters to kill the remaining snub fighters.

You can already abuse fast corvettes and hypervelocity guns to destroy massive fleets with basically no casualties. What you suggest would just make things worse.
Maybe you should build something other than boxes made of tissue paper for your fleets?

It makes the end of battles very tedious, because you would probably need up to a few minutes to just kill fighters.
That's not fun and not worth it for the few battles that the remaining fighters could really make a difference after all ships are gone.
Not to mention the mentioned GtS abuse.

I do. But it's fun to create glass cannon fleets made of entirely fighters. It just defeats the purpose if that swarm of fighters is deleted.

In my experience, the enemy fighters don't run. They either sit in one spot and await death, or they bull rush into your ships once they're all that's left.

Besides, you already have that problem with ground forces in orbit, who will run away constantly. At least fighters would put up a fight.

Just because your very specific and niche Playstyle is affected a bit by that decision, which wasn't made out of any mood, that doesn't mean it needs to change.
Having glass cannon fleets does work with the current set up and I have seen many people doing runs with only such ships.

That's not totally true, because here and it can happen that they hide, but even if they don't hide it would be damn annoying to fight them if you don't have dedicated anti fighter left. There is no fun way of ending battles that way at the battle scale TR has. In mods with a smaller battle scale where individual fighters have a bigger part in battles, it makes sense to have them as a win condition, but that isn't true for TR.

The part about the ground transport is half true, but transports actually carry weapons, are not supposed to be in space battles really and uh are not even comparable to fighters, because they are a totally different category.

EaW can also be EaW and throw a fighter squad into the abyss, so if they were victory relevant then the battle would never end
