How do eras/years work?

I'm confused on how the progression system works. If i were to select starting year 1 being 1-4aby, would my entire campaign be capped at 1-4aby? Or would there be the opportunity to progress further in the timeline? I don't want to start in the wrong era if this is the case.

You'll be able to progress further regardless what era you pick, even in GCs (like regionals) that are mostly focused around specific eras.

And whilst I'm being technical, Era 1 starts at 4 ABY rather than 1 ABY.
