Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I am starting to see a few questions that stand out over others as being asked several times, so I am making this for a quick reference for anyone who has one of those questions :)

1) When I try to enable this mod it says "Missing required Dependencies"

  • Answer: You must have both Gods and Kings AND Brave New World to use this version of the mod. There are 2 other versions available, links are at the bottom of the description on the main page.

2) Hey man, don't you know your lore? Isn't it supposed to be Black Marsh, not Argonia?

  • Of course I know my lore :) The imperials gave Argonia the name Black Marsh when they were trying to conquer it, that is why you see Black Marsh on many maps and lore, because most of the games we have are through an Imperial perspective, but the Argonians do in fact call their homeland Argonia. Because the Argonian Empire is represented by Argonians in this mod and not the Imperials, it is called Argonia, to respect Argonian Lore.

  • "Detractors long ago called the southeastern swampland of Tamriel "Black Marsh," but to its admirers, of whom there are a few, it is Argonia." - Taken from ingame lore (see here)[www.uesp.net]

3) No matter what I do, I cant get this mod to appear on my mods list, I have subscribed, and tried all the other download instructions in the description.

  • You are not alone! Steam has a tendancy to screw up people's downloads every now and again. The solution is fairly simple. You just need to clear your Mods cache. To do this you will need to Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/cache - In this folder you will find a file called Civ5ModsDatabase.db. Right-Click that file and DELETE it.

This will clear your cache and force Steam to re-download all your subscribed Mods. Once you load the game back up, and as soon as you go into the Mods selection area (where you can enable them), all your subscribed mods will begin to be downloaded again.

4) Are you going to modify the tech tree so we dont go past the Medieval/Renaissance era?

  • No. I have plans to modify the names of some of the techs, but I have no plans of disabling any of the techs. To me, Civ V is about "alternate realities" anyway, I find it quite fun to take the Elder Scrolls races into the future.

However, if you must limit your Civ V experience :), BlouBlou has already created such a mod that works very well for this request (no need to re-invent the wheel!), and it compatible with this mod. See his "Eras Collection" and choose whichever era you would like your game to stop "progressing technologically" at BlouBlou's Eras Collection

To further my opinion on this matter:

My goal was never to recreate the exact lore of Elder Scrolls, my goal was to allow Elder Scrolls lore fans to participate in and develop beyond the lore we already know and make it our own with each game of Civ V we play.

So the Lore in this mod will be somewhat lose in the early game but definitely following what we know of the early eras, the lore in the mid game will follow exactly what we have seen in the games (as close as I can get it), and the lore in the later game will be a hypothetical continuance of Elder Scrolls Lore.

Once the races of Tamriel discover gunpowder, don’t you think they would begin using it? If the other races were to expand on Dwemer knowledge and discover flight, they would use it, correct?

Think about this - If I was doing Earth lore and the Civ game had later eras with space battles and space colonization, I wouldn't limit my Earth mod to just what we know in 2014, I would do the same and have Moon, Mars, and alternate Galaxy colonies, LightSpeed and Wormhole technology, and Space Battleships.

Civ is all about expansion, whether we are talking about an empire or the "story" as we know it now.

5) Help! I'm on Mac and don't see a "Mods" button.

  • That's because the Mod's button is disabled by default on Mac (for whatever reason). But dont be discouraged, AlanH over at CivFanatics has put together a nice Tutorial for enabling and using Civ V mods on Mac! Follow this link[goo.gl]

6) I have the mod enabled, but I cant select any Elder Scrolls civs.

  • If the civs aren't showing up in your game after you have enabled the mod, you are likely leaving the mods section. After you enable the mod and click "Next" it brings you to the "Mods In Use" screen, here most people have been pressing "Back" and going back to the "Mods List", but you don't need to do this. You need to look at the top of the list and click "Single Player" to proceed into the mods section of the game....happens to a lot of people.

7) I like the civs, but I don't want all the name changes - I just want the civs only.

  • If you want only the civilizations and nothing else, follow these instructions:

Go to Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Mods/The Elder Scrolls Civilization Pack (BNW) (v1)/XMLs/Texts
    Find CoreGameTextUpdates.xml
Either delete this file or MOVE it to another folder location so you can use it again in the future

That is all you have to do, if you move it, you can move it back and forth depending on whether or not you want the name changes. When it is not in the folder path i listed above, all you will have are the civilizations included in this mod!

I will add more to this list if need be.

Thanks :)

Hey I need serious help in here. When I go to play the Tamriel TSL Marathon scenario, it won't let me choose what civ I want to be. It only says random.

Yes, that is explained in the description. you must start the game with random leader, you will start as Cyrodiil. Then as soon as you enter the game, you can Exit to Main Menu. Now once you load the scenario again, you can choose whomever you like................It has to do with the way Civ V loads mods, and that is the only workaround.

Read number 6 above, that is 100% your problem, either that or you don't have it enabled. Let me know

Not until Firaxis makes it possible, though in a recent podcast I listened to, Firaxis said that getting mods into multiplayer was at the top of their list for the "Fall Patch". So maybe in a couple months, when they release the patch, we'll be able to use mods in multiplayer! Fingers crossed :)

Is there any way to disable bits of the mod? I'm looking specifically at the changed names for resources, ancient ruins, religions, beliefs. and (note, I'm not sure if this next one is true) Barbarians and encampments. I wouldn't mind playing with them every once in a while but when I want to play with other mods its very immsersion breaking. I'd love to be able to enable and disable features at will.

I havent tried this, but I think you may be able to go into your Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Mods/The Elder Scrolls Civilization V Pack (BNW) (v1)/XMLs/Texts and find the "CoreGameTextUpdates.xml" Move this file out of the folder (place it on your desktop or something where the game cant find it). That should work, I puposefully placed all the "name changes" into a separate file for this reason. That way, when you do want to play with the name changes, you'll just move it back into the same folder.

(Small chance the mod wont load at all, because of missing files, but unlikely) I'm thinking that it will just play on and forget about the name changes.

If that doesnt work, then I'm afraid you'll just have to disable this mod, while playing other mods.

Edit: yes all that file contains are the name changes for city-states, religions/beliefs, resources, world congress, eras/time, Barbarians2Bandits etc. (so moving it in and out of that folder, shouldn't be a problem at all)

I was kinda interested in this mod until I noticed the art you swiped from Guild Wars 2 as your stand in for Ysgramor. I know that the Guild Wars concept art is pretty awesome, but would you be at all willing to replace that with an actual image of Ysgramor, like a screenshot of him from Sovengarde perhaps? If not, that's okay, I just wont play it, no big deal.
