Suggestions
I figured I'd start a discussion of suggestions to help clean up the comments section.

Some of my suggestions:
- Adding a bloom effect for the first few meters of beam travel, to create an exaggerated muzzle flash effect.
- Possibly allowing for beam colour, and associated weapon emissives to be customisable
- Adding a small grid fixed laser.
- Changing small grid laser to fire beams, like other weapons in pack.
- Adding larger fixed lasers with same aesthetic as pulse and beam lasers, with forked barrel design.
- Taking bolt shooting mechanic of the current small grid turret and expanding to a full range of hybrid energy/projectile weapons. My suggestion is that these require both power and hydrogen to generate ammo internally.
- More meaty sound effects for beam weapons. Descent Freespace 2 is open source now and has an exceptional range of excellent beam sounds.
- Casement mounts for broadside weapon mounts with limited traverse.

+1 for casemate guns and more fixed guns, especially for small grid. I have a hard time finding good small grid energy weapons, the starwars ones are all too star-warsy. Something about equivalent to the Mk1 from the other pack in pulse and beam variant would be great.

Expansion of Bolt casting weapons suggestion. 2 versions, much like beam and pulse lasers. Plasma and Particle guns. Plasma guns fire a bullet/missile speed bolt of energy, with (on larger weapons) an explosive effect on impact. Particle weapons fire a bolt very much like Whip's revived railguns, very fast, very high penetrative power, but very low damage radius.

This could even go further, with an Ion/Disruptor version or firemode for each, that cuts power to affected systems and is particularly effective vs shields via EMP damage. (BTW WRT Defense shield mod, I imagine the plasma and particle weapons in basic damage mode to be 50/50 energy/kinetic, so best shield settings to defeat these would be balanced 50/50 as well) Again, Ion plasma would be broad area damage, Ion Particle: deep narrow, possibly able to snipe through shields with reduced effect.

I like the current green energy bolts, and think this would be a good colour for damage mode, and vivid blue for ion. "Star wars-y" but that's going to be true of nearly any energy bolt idea.

As for ideas for the gun models themselves? I imagine them incorporating design elements of both the laser and kinetic weapons. Coils over exterior of barrels like telion weapons, with an emissive glow, kinetic recoil animation on firing, with forked barrels for last half. Maybe with a "thruster" flame glowing in between when fully reloaded and ready to fire.

Some further thoughts: I feel like there should be a slightly heavier version of the point defence weapon, with a 3x3 footprint, for use as a light anti-fighter weapon, offering better tracking than the smaller pulse and beam turrets, but with reduced but continuous damage output. Like a laser gatling pulse gun, which is what the point defence essentially is, but where that weapon is only really of use against missiles and meteors, and maybe EVA players, the anti-fighter weapon would be optimised to strike light armoured, small grid targets. Essentially an energy equivalent to the flak gun from collection 1. to balance said system, I'd suggest it being inaccurate, firing a cone of laser beams to sandblast a target with multiple strikes. Aesthetically, I like the low profile design of the point defence, and would either suggest that, or using the same turret body as the 3x3 beam and pulse turrets, (perhaps enlarged to cover the whole footprint) but with the glowing orb of a point defence or fixed laser recessed into the turret housing, firing through a narrow slot. The 2cm beam example world has some rotor turrets with this aesthetic, as a point of reference.

I have an idea for a new mod. I was thinking of a sort of EMP turret that would make the targets powergrid slowly fail.

Since the pulse batteries aren't explosive anymore, how about a plasma turret? It would work similar to Halo or Warhammer 40k, in that it's a big, slow moving projectile, with very good splash damage.

Unless I missed it in going over the others. I'd say balancing it with your other weapons pack the main gun in that hits a lot harder it seams, or is that because those rounds move a lot slower?

A 5x5 footprint version of the various laser turrets would be perfect, since the jump from the 3x3 XB1s to the 7x7 XB3s is a bit awkward.

Yeah, A 5x5 XB2 seems conspicuous in it's absence. I can't believe I missed that, given my walls of text above.
