I will say something to keep in mind are the fire rates. Sure you might look at a corvette and think "Wow, 6 rapid dual lasers"(or whatever it has), but then you realize it has a 5 second reload and suddenly realize why it's not working so good.
Some ships, while not having point defense, may also offer good laser arrays at good reload speeds. This, imo, matters most; your point defense ships are there to stop bombs and missiles first, any ship with lasers can deal with fighters. Fast firing laser ships, even if they don't have point defense, will be the ones doing the actual damage.
I'm not sure off the top of my head what the republic has when it comes to ships with many fast-firing lasers. Carriers and frigates are king in FotR, especially for the republic which lacks an abundance of heavy-hitter capitals like the CIS has.
Another thing is not to just plop all your anti-fighter ships out front: putting them in the gaps between your other ships, even towards the rear sometimes, can really help spread out their damage. While normally focusing down a single target is better for ship vs ship action, for swarms, spread areas of coverage is better. If your anti-fighter ships are all out front, they're useless to anything that gets behind them.
While they can dodge most fire coming their way on account of how small they are, light turbolasers and regular lasers are the enemy and something that the CIS has in spades. Fighter lasers are also extremely dangerous when massed and other anti-fighter corvettes carry enough regular lasers of all types to be a threat to other ships in their size class.
All this said however, CR90s are merely a part of the force you should be assembling to take the fight to the CIS. Support Peltas will keep them in the fight (or delay their demise long enough to help thin the cloud) and Combat Peltas provide a more durable face to absorb attention from their smaller fellows.
There are quite a few potential options.
Point Defense:
-CR90: Your bread and butter. Cheap and mass produced but well armed and it's power to weapons ability allow it put out additional bursts of damage. The small number of heavy lasers give it additional range and thus capable of covering more of the fleet. Despite being your "quantity over quality" option it's still a good little ship.
-Combat Pelta: The "quality" to the CR90's "quantity" it's much more durable and its anti-fighter armament is a substantial increase over the CR90 with a relative increase in credit and population cost. It also boasts light turbolasers making it a versatile fleet option.
-Support Pelta: Not as well armed compared to its combat variant and even the CR90. It still has capable anti-fighter weapons and is both durable and capable of healing nearby ships.
Gunships:
-DP20: While primarily an anti-ship corvette, the Light Concussion Missiles are incredibly effective against fighter swarms in addition to ships and the Light Quad Lasers are potent anti-fighter weapons. Full Salvo decreases the fire rate of its lasers but the boost to Light Concussion Missiles fire rate is more than worth it.
-Arquitens: A bigger and more durable DP20. It upsizes its weapons from lights to medium equivalents. I don't think the regular Concussion Missiles are as effective against fighters as the the light variant found on the DP20 but that could just be bias.
Heavy Frigates:
-Dreadnaught Heavy Cruiser: The DHC. The Wonder Child. It boasts both Heavy Lasers and fast firing Light Quad Lasers making it very good against approaching fighters.
-Neutron Star: Requires Order 65 but the Medium Quad Lasers fire exceptionally fast so bear mentioning in addition to its role as a carrier with bombers.
Capitals:
-Invincible Battleship: A substantial number of Medium Quad Lasers make it a dangerous target for fighters though given its size coverage is more distributed than concentrated.
Bro, you are forgetting the republic has the best fighters in the game, and most have missiles. What the republic needs is a semi competent light carrier accessible in campaign and maybe at merc stations
Like... The Acclamator 1 models? The Neutron Star? Did you mean something like the Ton Falk from TR? That'd be the Neutron Star.
They are also cheap enough that spamming them for countermeasures usually works out to cost less than replacing a couple venators per major space battle and the combined force of about 30 corvettes still offers substantially more anti-fighter capability than 1 venators worth of fighters can while also creating an area denial for any missile or torpedo weapons. That being said they have their merits, but only as part of a main fleet escort imho.
I gave a recent go at playing Republic again just for a short bit to see what's new(last I played 1.4 it was hutts, and their sorry ground forces left such a bad taste in my mouth that I uninstalled for a month lmao.) It seems pelta frigates would probably have the best concentrated laser fire for their pop cost; even though they have 2 fewer lasers than a CR90, they fire at twice the rate making them overall better at saturated spread of fire desired for dealing with low-hp fighter swarms.
Another thing to do for pure point defense is get 7 or more influence on Geonosis. Kolivex cruisers have insanely quick point defense and offer a squad of interceptors. You may only need a small amount to completely cover yourself from bombs and missiles. That way your fighters can focus less on fleet defense and more on escorting your bombers.
Most influence units are more or less just "flavor" units just for fun, but kolivex's are one of those which you'll really want as either faction: especially republic.
None of the above. Those are all frigates with hard points. I meant small ships that can deliver fighters and bombers that are fairly cheap and fleet tender viable.
You're not me and I'm not you. I can only vouch for my point of view. If asked if I think the Republic needs a light carrier like a quasar from the Rebellion/New Republic Era my immediate response would be no. They do not.
At no point have I thought "I need more fighters but can't afford/fit another Acclamator in this fleet. I need something smaller." If it was really necessary the Starbolt wouldn't be relegated to Era 1 FTGU and Senate mission rewards. They could be a fun addition to later era rosters sure, but fun does not mean absolute necessity.
The problem though, is that your counter to the confederacy's ability to ♥♥♥♥ out bombers, is trying to keep your fighters behind a screen of corvettes. Corvettes are no where near as effective at shooting down fighters than they should be, because they're simply too fast, maneuverable, and durable.
Then the CIS effectively gets double the firepower for their vulture droid and bomber squadrons, with at least a full squadron on most of their ships, including corvettes. The CIS fighter advantage just adds up to overwhelming fighter superiority imo, and I'm someone who mostly plays CIS.
