If you combine your available lucrehulks and providences to create your main battle fleet and attack key choke points will make defense much easier later on. Remember, the ai will only attempt to invade your border worlds, so never waste credit building space defenses on border worlds in the early game. The ai loves to destroy your border world defenses, that is why chokepoint worlds are key to defenses.
By the time you reach the mid to end game, your will be able to retake any world you want. So why complain about the early game? This game has always been about the mid and late game. Losing worlds in the early game is just extra battles to do in the mid and late game.
