When changing zoom factor or radius, way point icons and text scale as well which make distance perception difficult.

It appears that way points are treated as volumetric objects in the 3D space, like planets are.
A way point that is not a planet has no volume.

Icons and text should probably stay the same size like the ship pointer does.
