Total Assimilation (for v4.0)

Updates for 3.12
I'm updating the mod for 3.12, but I have a bit of a conundrum. It'd be helpful to hear from subscribers about how they'd like this handled.

Since TA[v2], the rule has been: as soon as you can Assimilate any species, you can Total Assimilate every species. However, in vanilla 3.12, the devs decided[forum.paradoxplaza.com] that any machine empire (whether gestalt or individual) can immediately assimilate any robot pop.

I see a few options.
  1. Carry the rule over as normal. This is most consistent, and easy to implement. But it means machine empires will have a significant advantage: immediate assimilation of any species. This also makes Driven Assimilator much less interesting and unique.
  2. Exclude machine empires from Total Assimilation, except for Driven Assimilators. This is easy to implement. Normal Assimilation will still function as normal for them, even if this mod is active. But this means those empires will never be able to assimilate organics, despite ascension.
  3. Choose some arbitrary condition under which machine empires can start using Total Assimilate on on any species. I'd probably choose the end of each new machine Ascension tree (Modularity, Nanotech, Virtuality). This might be unintuitive to players, and it would be easy to forget which condition enables this. I could modify tooltips to make it clearer, but that would make the mod more likely to conflict with other mods.
I'm currently leaning towards Option 3. Do you have a preference? Is there some other solution that I've missed?

Well in theory only ascendant or empires with asimilation capabilities should be able to assimilate pops. Exterminators should never be able to assimilate pops because that would make no sense and make them busted.

So 2 is the most natural solution here, howerver if 2 eliminates all machine empires even if they are not exterminators this could be an issue.

I would reccomend just allowing to anyone with ascendance and non exterminator allow to assimilate. This should be an easy few checks, all things considered. _is_homocidal and _has_ascension were the checks, I believe.

Also the link you have given me is busted had to go searching the mod to find this thread.

But that's exactly the issue, right? In vanilla 3.12, every machine empire, including Exterminators, starts the game with assimilation capabilities (restricted to robots).

Sorry about that, and thanks for letting me know.

Can you make a menu where we can enable or disable options, I like to play that every species I play can be assimilated by my species no matter with which species I play. But other players have other preferences so would you be willing to make it like optional? BTW I like this mod very much, please keep up the good work!!!!

Making a menu it out-of-scope for this mod, but I'll take that as one strong vote against Option 2. Thanks for weighing in!

Had a chance to play through a campaign as a machine empire with Option 2, and I have to admit: it doesn't feel right. I think the end of the ascended tradition tree is that natural place to enable Total Assimilation, since that corresponds to other big changes in the empire. So I'm leaning towards Option 3 now.

Imo, option 3 fits best. It also falls in lines with normal synthetic ascension adding the option to assimilate others as it works in Stellaris now.

OK, implemented Option 3 and pushed it. Let me know if you run into any issues.

Thanks for the feedback, folks!

Thanks for that, dev. I came here today to after trying out the new individualistic machines and they can't assimilate bio pops at all. That felt really bad, so I appreciate you giving us back the assimilation capacity after the situation.
I just don't know if it makes sense to assimilate for the Virtual pops, tho.

Glad you like it.

Hey, any species can upload their brain!
