I can go around this using events, but it's not a very clean solution and may cause problem elsewhere.
And yes, ideally I'd like to see the AI be able to patch together their colonies through granting provinces to neighbouring colonies, but of course there's more important things to tackle.
I just suggested it since you already had the mechanic that recognized when certain regions were completely filled by one nation to combine colonies - I thought maybe a similar thing could be done to handle these extra provinces if an entire region was colonized regardless of it being one country - but it would likely require some constraints on borders, distance from other colonies, etc...
I know I wouldn't want to write the code lol these are just my thoughts
