The relevant db table is unit variants colors and in here you clone a row enter the name of your custom unit and then the rgb values for three different colors.
This is relevant also to the variant editor as when clicking on item headings for example tunics or trousers you will notice down the bottom left of the ui a series of 9 clickable circles. Each row of three represents the primary secondary and tertiary color scheme of each item individually and each clickable circle in each row of three represents the individual colors saved in the db table units variants colors.
This allows you to not only define custom colors for your special unit seperate from the faction colors, but also to define the custoim color scheme for each item and component of the model individually.
Example for the armor you might select that its primary color will be the secondary color stored in the database table while setting the primary color of the helmet to the tertiary color stored in the database.
You can also create a second instance of the same objects, but with different colors in the primary secondary and tertiary slots, so that different units in the army in game will have the same item but different colors, allowing you to add variety to your model.
