Use the "zombify" interaction on an independent ruler to make them Patient 0 for the apocalypse. On their next birthday, the zombie ball will get rolling.

This was working perfectly when I checked 2-3 days ago but I think ck3's had another of those mini updates. I'll check it out and see what's up.

Why does becoming one of the culture/religion/trait make you the other two? Is there a reason there's more than just the trait?

Cos I'm a dumb-dumb who can't be trusted to properly set up anything that's meant to turn someone into a zombie to do all 3 simultaneously, so it's a failsafe to account for dumb-dumbness. It also makes things easier in the character creator, since you only gotta find and select one of the things to make a character a zombie.


There are things you can do using traits that you can't do with religions and cultures, and the same for cultures and religions. Hover your mouse over the special doctrine of their religion, the effects of their traditions and their trait and you'll see some examples. So all 3 were needed. This is assuming you don't want to overwrite a load of vanilla code and make the mod incompatible with lots of other mods.
I also figured it makes sense from a lore perspective. I don't imagine these zombies as being sapient/intelligent.
