I may add approach hazard zones to it in the future, but personally I don't think those are very fun, so it's a low priority change haha
Ah, fair enough, I personally don't mind the hazard zones myself, but to each their own :P

I think in 1.4 the only way to get the Eye Poker normally is from the Irisa merchant at the outpost.
In the upcoming 1.5 update it will also be available as a reward from completing the new dungeon. The Eye Poker's damage and flurry rate has also been rebalanced, along with the dandruff augment.
Several players have mentioned the Drill Spear being difficult to acquire as a crafting ingredient in the Discord server too, so I am hoping that adding it as loot to the new dungeon will help with that.
The large storage lockers in the cockpits of tier 6+ (Extreme) hostile ships are your best bet to find a Drill Spear in vanilla.
More info on Drill Spear:
In vanilla gameplay, the Drill Spear is inside the spaceWeapon treasure table.
The spaceWeapon treasure table is a 2% pull rate from the rareSpaceItem table.
The Drill spear is only available on a 33% chance in the spaceWeapon table from tier 6+ space anomalies.

If so is there a way to access the merchant separate from the outpost?
The merchant can be spawned and placed like most other merchants though.

The "default" is the name of one of the color presets that Starbound uses internally.
When you unpack the game's assets, you can find the color presets in the monsters/generated/colors folder. Some example palette names are "alien", "arctic", "garden", "magma", "snow", and "toxic".
In the Irisil Field Guide there is also an example of the spawn command that will create Irisil with different palettes, color coded to show which parts do what.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions \o/
