From like 5-10 minutes of research I've done, i've found out there were talking watches back in the day, i think that should be the replacement for normal watches if you plan on removing the watch overlay.

I think how it would be done is like you have that talking watch and you can tell the time from like right-clicking on the item and like clicking "Tell Time" from the context menu, maybe that noise will attract some zombies nearby.
