  • Lake map perfomance. It was expected during development, esp on big map size, but sadly there is not that much that can be done about it with how Rimworld codded.

Large puddle's 2nd Study description contains a chunk of the Pie description

TheRedPriest, ye, noticed and removed it yesterday. Probably steam haven't update the files yet or you was playing during the update, so it will be fixed the next time you launch the game.

ok so i went through the lake and i will say its rather interesting and disturbing. but i have 2 major issues with it though. 1, the map is really lagy and there is way too many enemies plus the map is way too big. and 2nd, the game continues to lag even after destroying the map using that computer

Mismagius, now right thread )
1. So what is the reason for lag, does it cause any errors?
2. From the tests it wasn't causing issues beyond expected perfomance decrease just like any vanilla map from quest. Vanilla game clearing the data from the map not instantly, but it shouldn't keep affecting the game for long after removal.
3. The size of a map mirror the colony map size, so that's why it prob was so big for you.

1: no it doesn't cause any errors, the lag is from too many of those visible fleshbeasts. you know, the typical lag when there are too many pawns/enemies on screen.
2: oh? so the lag resolves itself afterwards? well alright.
3: ah ok then, i see.

also, are there any plans for the flesh to start spreading out from the lake and possibly make it a class 5 entity like how it was mentioned in that computer?
[Zerg03] MrHydralisk  [developer] 12 Dec, 2024 @ 3:25pm
1. How bad is the lags btw? Cause decreasing amount of enemies will decrease thread drastically. So the lags itself shouldn't be much different from any giant raid with 100+ pawns, that players encounter in late game in vanilla.
2. Was thinking about an invasion or smf, but that prob would be a new anomaly instead of being part of the Lake itself. But will be relying on player to beat Lake first to spawn new one, like how Lake spawn only after Puddle. So far Lake with Puddle took almost a month to make, so it prob won't be soon. So for now I will concentrate on smaller scale ig.
3. Also the question on what your opinion was on difficulty and fairness, or was there any cheese strats? Cause I'm yet to see how players go through it outside of what I saw from prerelease tests. Amount of pawns, how well they their equiped and what was the losses would be a good reference.
Mismagius 12 Dec, 2024 @ 4:06pm
1: well to be fair, i'am like 4 or 5 in game years when i went in there and thats with performance mods. so i guess its because i'm far into the game for it to be pretty lagy.
2: well alright then, do take your time.
3: and well...to be honest i'm not so sure about the difficulty and fairness since i use a lot of modded equipment and since i was late game, my pawns were very well equipped. but in a situation that people use lightly modded games without strong equipment, i'm not entirely sure about the location's difficulty...so yeah, i can't really say for sure...

So far from the prerelease tests there was some nerfs of enemy spawn and fire rate. So rn with proper armor it shouln't be too bad. And ye, it was intended to be more of a late game threat, so it should be fine.
Egalexandr 15 Dec, 2024 @ 11:27pm
I don't like it. I built small room with ambrasures and turrets to keep their qty in place and when it generates flesh beasts and every time if one produced, game time is forced to x1 till it killed. Blood output seems low to tolerate this thing so I just filled the hole to stop this interaptions.
[Zerg03] MrHydralisk  [developer] 16 Dec, 2024 @ 3:52am
Egalexandr, forcing game into x1 speed is the vanilla thing, when any enemy is on the map, so that one not up to me. Ig you talking about Puddle, then ye, it early game liquid source, so it providing not as much. Depending on where it spawned, the fleshbeasts by default passive until triggered by something. That's also why, if you do the related research, then you can remove Puddle on it spawn without need for study fully.
Egalexandr 19 Dec, 2024 @ 11:12pm
I was wrong in previous comment, yes I meant puddle.

Then I get the lake event, even dived in it, well there are all troubles started. After map was generated, my TPS immidiately decreased from 330 (11 pawns) to 15-35, I assumed its because of amount of creatures on undergound map. Map looks too big, and I think it should be 1/4 or 1/5 of original size to keep the performance good enough.

Egalexandr, perfomance will go bad in any case, when new map with many enemies spawn. The size of the map mimicing the colony map for lore reasons. Bigger map do affect perfomance more than smaller, but it also spawn more loot due to size.

Darian Stephens 28 Dec, 2024 @ 3:22pm
The vanilla undercave from the pit is quite small compared to the default colony size, perhaps this is part of why.
If the lore impacts the gameplay in such a negative way, perhaps the lore needs to be changed to support the game?
[Zerg03] MrHydralisk  [developer] 28 Dec, 2024 @ 3:54pm
Darian Stephens, size affect amount of enemies, rewards, threat level. So making it smaller have a risk of making it too boring like pit gate or too cheesy. Lore itself is the reason, but not limiting adjustments too much. So far thinking maybe add an option in settings to force map size to what player would prefer.
Darian Stephens 28 Dec, 2024 @ 4:06pm
You could always increase the rewards, have tougher enemies, in a smaller area to compensate.
Maybe that could also be a config option, to scale those?
