    Classes:
  • Shoju - meaning 'attendant'. Palace and urban peons above slaves and peasants but below courtiers and the nobility. Used as footmen in wars.
  • Saburai - meaning "to serve". In the genpei war era, shoju classmen slowly gained delegated governance or military leadership responsibilities from the landed and bureaucratic elites. Men with skills from defeated clans would become hirelings, with enough money to buy armor and real arms. These responsibilities solidified this class into a new low class aristocracy, a new equestrian military class.
  • Ashigaru - meaning 'footmen'. A new adhoc class of people, proffessional soldiers and not the levied peasants as before. Consisting of expeasants, urban peons, destitute samurai or willy merchants. Not worthy enough to own a blade or ride a horse, as the samurai, but if skilled enough they can become samurai.
  • Samurai - A feudal military and administrative elite. Not a caste nor a nobility per se but a self recognized class: Educated enough to rule; intelligent enough to serve; well born enough to be in a clan; wealthy with lands; armed with weapons, armor and a horse to ride to battle.
  • Sohei - meaning 'armed monks'. Hermits, piousmen, monks, exiled sons, retired warriors. The Sohei are the religious clergy of japan bearing arms in defence of their monasteries, feuding with other sect temples or turning their weapons on the heathen feudal lords.
  • Ikki - meaning 'league' or 'movement'. Peasants, craftsmen, traders or servants, sometimes assisted (or manipulated) by clergymen or local samurai. Not necessarily an armed revolt, these groups are mainly concerned citizens petitioning for something. Sometimes the social conflict becomes an armed conflict, agrarian tools become weapons and arsenals are raided. The people would form in a 'Minpei', a militia. In any case, their activities are dangerous in a rigid feudal system and would be severely repressed.
