Battlerods basic mechanics
In the following posts we will place all the info that was going to be on the "Mechanics" page of the wiki, if we had time to post it. Hope you find it useful.

Fishing Damage

Battlerods use a unique class called the Fishing Class that is applied to both Battlerods and Fishing Knives. Items from this mod mostly apply damage upgrades to this class.

Bobbers

Bobbers are the projectile part of the Battlerod, that is your main method of attacking. You click the left mouse button for launching bobbers towards the enemy. If on Sticky mode, the bobber will attach to the enemy. From there, you press the Left mouse button again to Reel In the enemy, dealing damage after a set amount of time. That damage is roughly equal to the damage of the rod itself, divided by the number of bobbers you own spawned on the world. You can press the Right mouse button to try and Break Free a Bobber from an enemy it is sticking to. Doing so either makes the line snap, or make the bobber fall down, and reattach itself to some other enemy. There are benefits to doing so, such as to activate Discardables.

Bobbing (bob)

Bobbing, or a bob, is the term for every time the bobber does its basic action, usually the damaging of an enemy. Some actions, like spawning projectiles, may take more than one bob. If the bobber is attached, each time there is a bob, the enemy will receive damage. If a rod can spawn projectiles, it will do so after a few bobs, depending on each rod.

Bob Speed

A property of the Battlerod, it is the speed at which damage is dealt to the enemy when attached, and also the speed at which crowd control enabled bobbers create new projectiles and auras. It is measured in seconds per bob. The bob speed cannot be lower than 5 in-game ticks, or around 0.08 seconds per bob.

Sticky vs Turret (Non-sticky) mode

By pressing a predefined key (default N), you can swap your rod from Sticky to Non-Sticky mode. In Sticky mode, your bobber will attach to enemies on contact, and deal bobbing damage. In Non-Sticky mode, your bobber will not stick to anything, allowing you to fish without being disturbed, or set it on the ground as a projectile spawner, be it from the rod itself or from one of the many Turrets provided by the mod. Note that some accessories force Non-sticky mode on equip, namely the Turret Bobbers.

Ammos

Battlerods can use 3 main ammo types: Baits, Discardables and Turrets. Each of these is different on their effects and have several different uses. These ammos can be used on their own dedicated slot (shown below the inventory when a Battlerod is selected in the inventory) or use the Ammo slots from the base game. Each Battlerod has a different distribution of available baits, discardables and turrets it might equip, meaning one rod may be able to equip 2 different baits, but only one discardable, while some may have no ammo usage at all!

Baits

Baits are mainly debuff-inflicting ammos. When casting the rod, you will use up one of each allowed bait and gain a Powered Bait Buff, that tells you what debuffs you will apply to the enemy. Then, either on attach or when near the enemy (If Bait Dispersal is available), you inflict those debuffs onto them. Debuffs are slotted up in a single Powered Bait Debuff, so some will stack with other weapon's debuffs. The time the bait is available is only used up when the debuff is being applied, or when dispersing it mid-air. When it runs out, if you cast the line again it will consume more of the available baits. The buff can be canceled to stop the current baits, but as long as you have baits equipped, it will consume them when the rod is cast and the buff is not present. While these baits can be used for fishing, this can only happen if they are in the base Terraria inventory or ammo slots, not in the dedicated slots. Baits can all be crafted from either Apprentice, Journeyman or Master Bait and a secondary ingredient at the Bait Workshop, which is obtained from setting down a Certificate of a Master Baiter that is dropped from the Cooler either in Expert or Hard mode. IF the setting is on, it can also be bought in the Fish Lady's secret shop. You can also receive these baits from the Angler Quests, and sometimes Hard Mode baits can be obtained in Pre-Hard Mode that way.

Bait Dispersal

Baits can sometimes be applied to enemies near your bobber or even to enemies hit or near the projectiles your rod shoots. This is called Bait Dispersal, and will consume your baits as long as it is active, in exchange for providing their effects at a range.

Discardables

Discardable Bobbers, or simply Discardables, are a type of ammo where when your line breaks, cause an effect to spawn where the bobber used to be. This ranges from Explosions, Slowing down enemies, Generating fires (for a while),Rotating Blades and more. Discardables can sometimes be crafted, but the main source is the Fish Lady, where you can exchange Fish Steaks for new ones.

Turrets

The final type of ammo, Turrets make your bobber shoot certain projectiles when idle or when bobbing, allowing you to hit enemies that are not attached to the bobber. They are much more expensive than the baits or discardables to craft, and must be recharged with a Recharger before being able to be used. Each turret requires different items to charge, and some can be charged with multiple different types of items for different effects. With the exception of one, all turrets are crafted. Many can come in three versions, where V2 spreads the projectiles further when colliding with tiles, and V3 spreading the V2 spreaders when colliding with tiles, allowing the projectiles to spread back where the bobber was. Turrets, like baits, have a Buff that can be canceled to erase them, and will only count down their timer when a bobber is out.

Reeling

Reeling is the act of trying to pull an enemy towards you by holding the Left Mouse Button while the bobber is stuck on an enemy. If the enemy is bigger in area than the player, the player gets dragged into the enemy. Otherwise, the enemy is pulled towards you. Be aware that, due to what Terraria considers an NPC, some enemies may be partially dragged towards you instead of you being pulled as expected (ie: Worm boss segments). Reeling increases Tension, which can either increase your bob speed or damage with the rod, depending on the config. In Tension only mode (also a config option), enemies only get damaged by the bobber when you are reeling in, with a tension of Green or Higher. In Boss Tension Only mode (the default config option), only bosses require reeling in and Tension to get damaged.
Tension

Battlerods have a minimum and maximum bob speed/damage multiplier that can be achieved by reeling in an enemy. When attaching to an enemy, your tension is 0. Reeling with a reel-capable rod will increase the Tension, and when the line becomes green, you are applying enough Tension to damage an enemy (in Tension only config option). Keep reeling, and the line will eventually turn yellow, and then purple. Purple is the max tension you can get before it's useless to have more tension. Keep reeling and you end up with a red line. This means it is close to breaking. Keep reeling and the line will snap, breaking the line and freeing the enemy. Breaking the line will trigger the discardables. The High Test Fishing Line and the Titanium Wire prevent the line from ever breaking. Tension is conveniently displayed in the info-accessory bar, showing what is the maximum tension currently applied to your bobbers. Most battlerods have 1x to 2x damage/bob speed increase from minimum to maximum tension, but some will have greater multipliers on the end.

Over Tension

If you use one of the escalation potions or one of the escalation-providing accessories, you can get further damage/bob-speed by going into red tension and keep pulling. This effect, called over tension, allows you to reach much greater damage than with the regular rod, at the expense of taking more time to reel in the enemy. Over tension does not stop an enemy from being dragged into you (or you into the enemy), so it is possible that reeling like this will result in a head on collision.

Reels

An accessory type, reels allow even rods with no reeling ability to reel in an enemy. Reels also allow you to reduce or increase the speed at which tension is gained, by pressing the Gear Key (G by default) when holding a battlerod in sticky mode. Press G+(down) to decrease gears (slow gears), or just G to use faster gears.

Holding your ground

If you press both the left and right direction while reeling, you enter a "Hold your Ground" mode, where you lose all your horizontal momentum and velocity in exchange for reeling in much faster, regardless of where the enemy is. This is the only way to "reel" with battlerods that don't have reeling mechanics.

Tensile Strength

A property of the Battlerod, it is the max amount of reeling one can do before the line breaks. It is measured in pixels per second (pix/s)

Reeling Speed

A property of the Battlerod, it is the acceleration at which the entities are dragged towards each other when reeling. It is measured in pixels per second squared (pix/s2)

Lures

The amount of fishing lines you can have in world at once. Each Battlerod has a number of lures it natively produces when shot, equaling one bobber per lure. Damage of a battlerod is always divided equally between lures, meaning a 100 damage rod with one lure/bobber would have 50 damage on each bobber if it had two lures. Multiple accessories (Lures) can be used to increase or decrease the amount of extra fishing lines you have.

Turret Mode

While in turret mod (Non-Sticky), your bobbers will never attach to enemeis, and gears have no effect. However, you can use the native projectile spawning from the rods while they are on the floor or floating, as long as they are still. This means that turret mode can be used to spread turret projectiles, bait effects and more without ever bobbing in an enemy. It is possible to detonate some turret projectiles and spreaders by pressing the gear key (G by default) when in turret mode. Turret mode is very useful as a way to fight invasions, and combined with the Turret Bobbers, which grant 100% more bob speed at the cost of not sticking to surfaces, can make many fights with multiple enemies easier.

Throws

There are a group of accessories that allow you to stop the bobber at your cursor, and some later variants allow you to even drag them across the screen with the mouse. These accessories, the throws, are useful for turret mode, as they allow for projectiles that die on tile contact to spawn under them, and spread around some more damage.

Fisherman's Fishing Kit

With so many accessories in the mod, it would be almost impossible to use them all together. However, there is a set of accessories, the Fishermans Kit,that allow you to use some of the accessories in this mod without taking more than one accessory slot. The Fishermans Kit comes in 5 different variants, one for inventory, one for piggy bank, one for safe, one for defenders forge and one for Void bag. Placing the accessories in the correct inventory that you picked will allow most items to act together if they are not mutually exclusive. Which accessories work there and what accessories are mutually exclusive can be seen in the accessory's tooltip.

Other Concepts

Life Steal

The draining of a small percentage of damage dealt from enemies into the player's life, healing them. Some battlerods have this natively, and there is a Post-Moonlord accessory that provides this for all rods when equipped.

Mana Syphon

The draining of a small percentage of damage dealt from enemies into the player's mana, restoring some magic power. Some battlerods have this natively, and there is a Post-Moonlord accessory that provides this for all rods when equipped. Life Steal but for Mana.

It looks like some headings didn't quite get the right formatting. "Bobbing (bob)", "Sticky vs Turret (Non-sticky) mode" and "Fisherman's Fishing Kit"
