I worked on grav gun designs for about three months to pass the time while bouncing between Kuwait and Iraq. I hit several delays due to demands of the war and of course Keen changing the laws of physics on a weekly bases. The build itself only took a few days, then went through a few iterations of redesigns to compress the size (i'll post some GAW legacy pics on Igmur). The rest was figuring out how to wire the timers and displays to add fucntionality and foolproof the system (make it harder to break).
The turrets are just learning platforms to figure out optimal grav gun and projectile designs. That includes figuring outthe number of grav gens required, timer sequencing and positioning, displays, etc. For the projectiles, its balencing between projectile size and resource usage to energy and damage inflicted on a target. It not very efficient if any damage inflicted on an enemy ship costs you several times the resources as he looses.
The powerpoint slides and checklist guide was just me geeking out, but those were also essentially done to add to the image of the build and make it's purpose and usage easier to understand. I tried to make it interesting as a recruiting tool to attract scripters to help with some of the harder aspects of the build (like a functioning range finder, ore management system, and automate the guided weapons to a degree).
The next step is to transfer those lessons to a stand alone weapon system BP that can be easily installed and operated on community ships. You can see some of the concepts on igmur http://ryansplace25.imgur.com/.
For mobile platforms, the key challenge is getting the large/small rotor merges necessary for the number of timers needed to sequence everything, to not sheer away at higher speeds. Currently, any ship i've installed a mobile grav gun has a max VNE (velocity) of 90 m/s.
The inspiration came from Whiplash after he posted seperate projectile and ore guns on the workshop. He established many of the core principles for large/small block grav guns. The displays in their current state are thanks in a huge part to d4rky1989 after he modified his multipurpose script to allow creation of customized displays with arguments which I rely on heavily.
