PeTI M02`15: Lasers (Won by:Camerson1313)
Current stage: The competition is over

This Monthly challenge
This challenge was submitted by: quaternary
The idea for this challenge is to do the following:
Your map must include the following:
* at least 1 laser emitter
* at least 3 laser devices (laser catcher, laser relay, etc), but
* absolutely ZERO laser redirection cubes

And we have a winner!

Camerson1313 won this competition...
...with a nice total score of 24 points.

This weeks runner ups are: olshi who came second with 17 points, and quaternary who came third with 11 points.

Camerson1313, you are entitled to give us the next weeks challenge. Can you reply here before the end of this month GMT +0, and tell us what you'd like to see in the next competition?

Thank you, quaternary. I have removed the cubes so I can submit my rubbish experiment. :demoticon:

Well done, mappers. Here come the test results:

The top three for me:
1) oishi
2) quaternary
3) | \_/ ()

These were all a nice balance of getting a sense of accomplishment (the 'aha!" moment) without overdoing it (into what one might call the 'd'oh!' moment). Simple and elegant.

Interesting variety here. This vote was realllllllly close haha

1. | \_/ () - Lazored
+ really cool map, interesting logic, and a beuuutiful final move <3 <3
2. camerson1313 - Quantified Observarion: Area 4
+ love the feeling of progression at every step of the way. had a blast solving it
3. Daoud Baba - Futuristic Lasers
+ unique "angle laser" puzzle, lots of options but only a few end up working (Like a maze)

1. QO:A4 - camerson1313: enjoyed the puzzle, complex and nicely done.
2. Feedback - olshi: balanced puzzle - with lots of "use again this white surface" - and perfect design. Enjoyed the "portal feeling".
3. Cracken - Polux: hated the hidden button (moreover in first versions), but awesome and challenging ideas (elevator jump -> arg), cool design especially for a first try with hammer and overall good puzzle.

I must add that I enjoyed playing all the maps here.

Just a little thought about group and votes: I would really like to get some feedback from other group's members on my maps, even negative ones. That's one of the reasons for which I joined the group: improve. Even a short "nice puzzle" or a "hated this part" are welcome (I'll answer and argue for sure, but at least I'll know your opinion.)

When I see some first page's popular maps, I knowI'll never get here because people are mostly happy when firing 2 portals and activating a laser catcher, and mostly amazed when they put a cube in front of that laser to turn it off. In this group, we have players expecting a bit more from portal than this, so... please, comment :)

1. Quantified Observation: Area 4 - by camerson1313 (really well designed and interesting with a final part to it that has a clear satisfying "aha" moment that I love. The only downside to it is the size. Long walks are imminent)

2. Restricted Redirection - by nintendo.erk (has a nice puzzle and I love how it uses its compact space very well)

3. Laser grids - by Talisac (has a creative move in the way it's solved and it looks interesting with the rooms stacked onto each other)

This really was a close race. I especially had a hard time choosing the 3rd place because quarternary, olshi and | \_/ () were all close runner-ups with their own great chambers.

This competition in my oppinion has the best maps of all competitions which I took part in. That is why it's hard to choose the 3 best maps out of all these fantastic entries, but I decided to base my choise on whether I've added the map to my favorites or not.
Luckily, there are exactly 3 maps which I favoritized:
  1. camerson1313 - Quantified Observation: Area 4 - It's one of the best maps I've ever played! It's so challenging and yet so satisfying! Everything is there what needs to be there and nothing else. It's awesome!
  2. olshi - Feedback - I really don't know what sort of measurements and trial-and-error testing is needed to make a test like this. Every laser, glass, wall, catcher and relay is perfectly angled and positioned in a way that there is only one way to solve this awesome puzzle. HOW?!
  3. nintendo.erk - Restricted Redirection - We all know nintendo.erk's made so many great maps, so I get the feeling that sometimes his not-so-great maps get a bit too much attention. This is not the case here. Restricted Redirection is a well thought out puzzle with a simple idea that makes it one of the best laser puzzles in the multiverse.
