Because it would make no sense for the items in a crate to be more valuable than the crate + the key itself. You have the initial hype where people want the new items and they'll pay a lot for them but that profit window is really small and during that time the crates cost a lot as well, since there's a small supply of them. There might be 1 or 2 items in a crate that are more popular thus more valuable, making it worth uncrating for but that's not always the case.

Usually people open crates not for the items inside it, but for the chance to get an unusual. The items are just a bonus.

There is a correlation between the price of the Salvaged Crate and the stranges it contains. If you take the average price of the stranges in it, you'll get more or less the price of the crate. The crate was worth unboxing because it contained some high value stranges. Once one of those stranges (the huntsman) dropped in value, it dragged the price of the crate down along with it thus lowering the value of all the other stranges.

That's one of the reasons, and the other reason in my opinion is the fact that Valve took so long to release crate #50. There were ~25k crates and their number was only increasing so people probably figured it's not worth investing in them anymore.

Some people actually like certain craft numbers so if you can get one cheap, you can sell it high to the right person and make a nice profit.

TF2Finance had it listed between that range before the new price was accepted on bp.tf and it has stayed there ever since.

It appears it's come to a halt, being relatively stable @ 4.00-4.11.

It's not the trader's that are overpricing them though, it's the players that are willing to pay that much for them. It's just an initial hype and it'll probably settle soon by itself. Same thing happened to the Genuine Balloonicorn.
