Woefully undercooked at launch, sure, but Fatshark threw it back in the oven and stuck with it. A year later, Darktide is finally well on its way to becoming what it should have been from the beginning.

You can rest easy tonight knowing that at the very least you didn't pay $100 for the same disappointment you can feel in me right now for free.

You dismember, burn, hack apart, and riddle with lead waves of bloodthirsty (mostly) biological horrors into some of the prettiest gore you'll presently find - all so that you can turn around the next wave with a wide arsenal of better gear to do it all again even more magnificently alongside many different teammates. Thanks to the community workshop, the variety of locations to engage in your slaughter is vast from the apocalyptic streets of Paris to the depths of Bikini Bottom. The options for character customization are numerous with 10 classes, a couple handfuls of characters, and an entire mall of cosmetics to snazz them out with from a battle suit to clown apparel.

Does the game have issues? Absolutely. Corner-spawning, content bloat, paid weapons with notably less effort put into them than the free ones, 2/5 of the bosses being one step above target practice, and class and weapon balance being taken out back and shot years ago among other things - but you know what? I can't think of anything that seriously enough disturbs the core gameplay loop I first talked about.

Being given such a deep box of content to explore with replayability further layered on top so richly, it really seems too good to be true that such an experience only ever demanded $30, especially one supported for so many years after release.
