This is a gem. This has THE formula... It's short, sweet, with excellent replayability. But, the formula... the gameplay loop is neuron activation incarnate.

This is not "just a card game." Yes, it's solid and it's fun, but... If you like creepy stuff as much as I do, this is for you. If you've played any other Daniel Mullins Games, you know what the deal is. I wish I was talented and cool...

I don't not recommend this game, but it left me feeling a little bit disappointed.

Well, it's a good game in general, and it's my favorite type of horror, psychological horror... Or thriller even. Hell, What I like best is when something is creepy and gives me the goosebumps. Which sometimes this game does.

I love the concept and almost everything about it... Just the payoff at the end was just okay. I beat it 100%, and I will probably never play it again.

Honestly, the worst part about it, is the mood breaks a lot and for too long of a time.

Yeah, it's exactly what you think... But it's pretty much done, it's not some dummy early access type deal. It's fun, cute, and entertaining, though the ONE singular gun sound and the ONE singular execution (for each weapon) kinda gives me a headache.

Early Access Review
EDIT: 10 months after my initial review; it remains the same. I, apparently, still suck. Or the game is still too darn hard. I dunno. But I will re-iterate that I want to see a movie in this artstyle.

It kills me to leave a review like this... I want to LOVE this game, but I'm so frustrated that I don't even want to play anymore.

This is one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen, every time a cutscene plays, it's like watching a moving painting. It's exquisite. The gameplay, well... the core, the fighting feels super smooth and weighty. And when you get a kill, it's extremely satisfying. Unfortunately, that's kind of rare. This is also one of the most difficult games I have ever played in my life. I don't know how high the leveling system goes, but I'm only like level 14, and I want to cry... It's so difficult. I don't think I even got far in the story... Like at all. Yes, of course, git gud and all that, but I've been playing games my entire life and this is insanely difficult.

Parrying only works if you're within a Planck time of the enemy move hitting you. The i-frames in the dodge seem to... activate at like random times of the roll. The telegraphing of enemy moves are good, but not in their timing.... ie; they'll reach back, wait an un-intuitively long or short time-frame and use their move with varying speed, so I can hardly ever tell when it'll hit. The game punishes you so hard too, harder than even Outward, and that game is hard too.

I won't go into details because it's mentioned in a thousand different reviews already, but some of the gameplay/design choices are some of the stupidest things and some of the coolest things I've ever seen.

This game is like dealing with a bi-polar schizophrenic. And I know because I was married to one.

This needs a LOT of work. But, I can't lie; I've enjoyed playing it thus far. Quite a bit, even.

Good luck french bois

Recommend only because I can see the devs doing good work with this AND because this is the first extraction shooter I ACTUALLY like.

There are A LOT of issues. It is HORRIBLY optimized. And when you ADS into a scope the framerate halves. HORRIBLE desyncing issues. And because of that, the guns feel like they have a mind of their own and their impact is that of an airsoft gun, as well it makes it seem like you're putting in 20 rounds into someone without a dang shirt on and they still dome your a$$.

That being said... I love this extraction shooter formula. I don't wanna get chris kyled by another player, so I stick to the PvE mode, and everyone is very supportive. It makes me happy. go team.

This is an excellent remake of a game that came from what I consider the golden age of video games (between '04 and '14). I even went back and played the original '08 version, and boy... It's showing its age, for sure! So it was great to get to play this after the flop of the Callisto protocol, though I still do want to play that as well.

All in all, it's great, excellent.... Almost made me forget that EA had its hand in it. BUT... this is a personal gripe; giving Isaac Clark a voice is THE worst decision they made for this game.

A WELL MADE silent protagonist, like the original Clark, the Doomslayer, or Freeman, set a history and motivations for the character (actually, more for you), sure... But they're still an empty vessel, and then you as the player, can immerse yourself into this character, make your thoughts theirs, your actions theirs, your morals and values... well, theirs. It makes you feel IN the story that you're experiencing. But... I found that when you give the protagonist a voice, (hell, even some text options, depending on the game) it pulls you out of the story, and you end up watching it from the outside.

I think it's super subtle, so my opinion/rant on this is probably dumb... But I find there's a massive immersive difference between:

"Hey Isaac, the Ishimura is all messed up." - NPC to you, the player (as Isaac Clark)
and
"The Ishimura is all messed up." - Clark to another NPC

or, or!

*Something spooky happens*

"I'm spooked, i need to take a breath" -Clark.
and
"I'm spooked, I need to take a breath before I continue playing" - you

ONE MORE EDIT:

It's been a little bit since it's been out, they added a few more things here and there... Unfortunately, my feeling is still the same. This, in and of itself, is a perfectly decent game. Good even. But, it's not a Runner experience I expected. If I could have gotten a refund, I would. It's just not for me, and as a HUGE snowrunner fan, I don't recommend it if you are one too.

EDIT:

Every single time I try to play this or think I want to play it, I end up playing snowrunner instead. I don't know, it just feels off. I understand that it's a different take on the formula, and it's not supposed to be the ultimate change for the runner series... But lets be real, the people most likely to buy this game are fans of snow runner, and frankly... if they're anything like me, they'll just end up going back and playing snow runner.

truly, I WANT to like this, but I'll turn it on and be like "man, i need to move them long logs to zimnegorsk."

ORIGINAL:

Like another review said, it... needs "time to mature" maybe. It's similar to the best Souls Like I've ever played, Snowrunner, but it's divided into teeny tiny portions... It's not a bad formula. But I feel like something is missing... And I can't put my finger on it.

If you liked snowrunner, I think you will like this, but probably don't get the Year 1 edition.

I'm having a blast. Loved the first one, this one is a great evolution of it. I fortunately never had any crashes, and I'm really glad to see that it went up from mixed to mostly positive in just a single day.
