Not as good or long as Borderlands 2 but still really good. Co-op almost required to get the most out of it though IMO, just like the other BL games. Highly recommended if you like BL.

Probably the best way to play this game now. Although I don't particularly care that much about Quake II (I prefer III) it is a pretty cool demo to show of RTX.

A good game with some rough edges

I’m loved JC2 and played it for about 200 hours so comparisons to that game are definitely made

The graphics are good looking, the explosions plentiful with way better variation of thing to blow up, the world is big enough and the sound design (besides the voices) is great. The gameplay is fairly good and the story is simple but good (although shorter than JC2 I think). There are however a few things I like to rant about.

I’ll start off with the first I noticed which was the voice actors. They are clunky and poorly done while technically better than JC2 and Rico’s voice is just plain wrong but I guess you get used to it after a while. There isn’t any flow in the conversations either. One person talks, a few seconds passes and then the next person talks. It’s really noticeable that the voice lines of the different characters weren’t recorded at the same time in the same room or even with the other voice lines being played.

Then comes the cutscenes where the camera constantly shakes (like the camera man has Parkinson’s or something) and a FOV that makes you want to throw up.

At that point when you gain control of Rico you immediately notice that the FOV is horrible even in normal gameplay, so you jump into the settings to increase it, but wait! There is no FOV slider. You have to download a mod called JustFOV[github.com] in order to change it, but it doesn’t work perfectly and makes the cutscenes glitch a little. I don’t understand why they didn’t include a simple FOV slider.

The controls and feel of movement are ok once you get used to them but they aren’t really good or anything. The parachute is really slow to drag forwards and holds no momentum like JC2. They made it like that just so they could implement a wingsuit that can be either really satisfying or terribly clunky to use. Regardless, the parachute feeling from JC2 is gone and the wingsuit doesn’t fully replace it.

Also worth noting about the wingsuit is that is makes cars feel obsolete, Saint’s Row 4 style. That is unfortunate as they were always fun in JC2, not that they feel particularly great in JC3 regardless though, but whatever.

Aiming feels horrible until you unlock a special upgrade that allows you to aim freely. However, once you have it, you will have to disable it if you ever want to use lock-on systems in vehicles and planes. This will also cause a really frustrating issue that blocks you from progressing the story because at some point you have to shoot down jet planes that are way faster than yourself before they destroy an escort, but they are impossible to kill without the lock-on. Even if you turn it off you might still have to restart the game for it to even take affect which is really dumb. Took me an hour to figure that mission out.

The upgrade system in general is pretty weird. It feels like they just locked out basic features just to fill out their unnecessary skill tree.

The world is bigger and filled with stuff yet it feels emptier than JC2 somehow. JC2 had a lot of repetitive villages, cities, army bases, etc that were all kind of the same but really filled the world and for most people it was very unlikely that they would ever run out of them. Yet in this game you can complete areas much quicker (no more endless searching for a tiny transformer) which is good but there are also far less of them making the world feel smaller and/or emptier in a way. Idk.

There were more things I had some comments about during my initial playthrough but it has been a while since I last played it and I’m tired. Plus, nobody ever reads longer reviews anyways so who cares ;)

Just to clarify, I am not hating on this game, I do actually like it but it does lack in certain areas were JC2 did just fine or even shined. Another note worthy thing now that I think of it is that you shouldn’t bother buying the DLC unless you get them included for a good price. The DLC are pretty short and pretty boring as far as I remember (not remembering them is a good sign of how unimpressed I was by them).

The length of the game was roughly 50 hours for me which included all the DLC and capturing every province and some screwing around including shooting cows into space, collecting cars and flying head first into mountains while trying to learn to use the wingsuit.

In conclusion: The game is good but it could have been better. It’s worth a purchase when on sale.

A very fun little game worth buying. Although it has to be said that co-op is more or less mandatory, not because of difficulty but because of how much more fun the game gets.

It can be fun sometimes, especially with friends, but the grind and repetitive mission types (there are exceptions but they are few and far between) just kills it for me. I just get bored and never feel the urge to start the game. Couldn't recommend it personally but it is not a straight up bad game or anything.

Singleplayer is "OK" at best. Multiplayer is completely dead. Nobody is playing this game anymore. It says 30 people are playing but you will not be able to find a match unless you are lucky. Even when it was working it wasn't all that great and it was filled with bugs. I also had a huge issue with the mouse shooting everywhere for no reason which after many years apperently never got fixed. It is just ridiculous that they dare sell the game for $60 in 2019 or $180 for the "complete bundle". Just give it out for free already, even EA has been doing that with their older games including BF3, 4 and hardline. Even BF1 has been like $2 with free premium. This is just dumb.

A lot of fun for what is fundamentally a very simple concept. It might take a while to get any good at it though.

Best played with friends and a controller.
