Desolate Farming (In Development)

Description
The goal of this mod is to extend farming and survival aspects of Kenshi in locations which do not normally support any farming. This mod introduces a "Survival Pot" and a new food source called "Rock Carrots". These are a low quality source of nutrition and they must be boiled to be eaten. Rock carrot plant requires placement on ground which has high concentration of stone in the soil.

This mod is inspired by "Project Zomboid"s "foraging" mechanic. For example its possible to create a pine cone foraging plot. You may roast the pine cones on the survival pot to create "roasted pine nuts" which require no water to make. As an added bonus your workers will gain in perception skill as they scour the ground for any pine cones which have fallen. While I cannot randomize what you find (due to Kenshis limitations) at the very least you have choices on how you want to use your resources collected.

You can choose to "plant" unwanted pine cones and turn them into pine trees to collect pine needles, which can be used in the production of fibers use to make "forest wool" and then refined into fabrics. Tea is currently still being worked on. I may turn it into a trades good / or fuel source for group healing item (handy for large groups after combat) if I can get the functionality working correctly. Currently its a low grade medkit... which will probably get changed in the coming months.

Desolate Farming does not require any other mods to run. However I have tuned Desolation Farming to work cohesively with "Realistic Hunger Mod." Its possible to survive when opting for that experience. At its core this mod is meant to work both ways, as a survival mod, and also to open the map up a little bit so we can enjoy some of the harsher regions of Kenshi.

Features:
---------------------------------------------------------

1) Rock Carrots:

Rock carrot plants produce food in any biome. Good for players who want to create outposts in sections of the map which are "Dead" and have no way of producing food naturally. This opens up the map a little bit. The Rock Carrots cannot be abused for monitary gains, they have little value. These carrots are scaled to provided low quality "desperation" food source. Their upside? Boiled rock carrots are extreamly lightweight for travel. (How many can be stacked is still being tuned)

"Rock Carrots" can be purchased from some vendors in town. "Rock Carrot Plant" construction will require a single carrot. The growth rate (production) of the rock carrots is very slow to limit abuse. You are intended to use mulitple plants to feed your people. The Rock Carrot is inspired by the Wild Carrot; Queen Annes Lace, just a little more rugged to fit into the setting of Kenshi. I have created Icons for the carrots. However dropped carrots may look a bit fishy until I have finished their 3D model in blender

2) Carrot Basket: Stores rock carrots, assists in automated food production with Kenshi AI mechanics. Helps your cook be less derpy! :D

3) Survival Pot: Used to create rock carrots and other recipes like Boiled Meat, and Carrot Soup.

4) Eatery Stand: A table your people can use to feed themselves.. Similar in function to the "Food Storage Barrel". All unique mod related food items are going to be stored here.

5) Improved Stove: A combination item which allows you to cook traditonal stovetop recipes indoors, as well as desolate variety.

Thank you for helping to test this mod! <3

I am very open to more ideas on how to improve this mod. So go ahead and leave a comment or suggestion. I may not respond but I promise I will read them and consider ideas and feedback.

That said there are many limitations on what is possible. If a feature/function doesn't already exist in game it simply can't be done. Unfortunatly Kenshi mod creation will not allow you to write code and you can only use what exists within the editor. I'm trying to be as creative as I can making "farm like" items without having the ability to properly plug and play into existing growth mechanics.

~Cheers this is my first mod so go easy on me <3

HELP SECTION (Updated 9/ 07th / 2019:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Sometimes my cook in charge of rock carrots / carrot soup just stands still and does nothing:

A: The cooks inventory is full:

Any recipe (or crafting recipe) which requires multiple types of ingredients has a chance of clogging the characters inventory. This is a problem with Kenshi AI and its not just related to cooking. To get around this issue assign a "kitchen helper" to refill the stove / survival pot so the cook doesn't have to. This will mean the cook is only ever picking up the finished product, and hauling it to the appropriate storage container. Their inventory will never become clogged as long as they have a helper.

Special Note : Any cook that is responsible for cooking a single ingredient into a finished product never needs assistance so long as the finished product is the same size. So anyone in charge of roasting pine nuts will not need any extra help.

2) How can I get my "Kitchen Helper" to refill the cooks station?

A: You can shift + right click on a work station.

Click on inventory to assign your unit to haul items and refill the cooking station when it gets low. Time management can be fun. Place the refilling job high on the units priority list, the assign that unit something else to do during their downtime. I like to assign them to Rock Carrot collection. (Hauling to the Rock Carrot basket) as a way to train up their athleticism.

Most of the buildings don't start an outpost, the level 2 pine trees do if I build the level 2, upgradign from lvl 1 to 2 works fine, but the level 3 trees always start an outpost. The pine oil distillery and fabric loom also start an outpost. I think the pine storage does also start an outpost (need to test this again) Not sure if that's intended, or a bug but it's something to keep in mind when using this mod and you want your camp to remain invisible on the map.

Research is required to get things going. If you encounter any issues please let me know. I made the mod use its own specific items (so this should prevent conflicts) because i noticed some camping mods use the root vanilla item and can conflict. You should be good.
