Hope it helps anyone!
According to lore Rimworld where events take placehad intense war going on few centuries prior. Y'know that event where things get bombed and burned a lot.
And what does happen to steel if you bomb it to pieces and then burn everloving crap out of it?
Intense oxydation, as in iron and carbon both separate and bind to oxygen- carbon goes poof in a form of carbon dioxyde, while iron rapidly turns to rust.
What is rust? Basicaly hematite (one form of iron ore).
If anything this mod doesn't go far enough- there should be only two metal deposits.
Compacted Metal and Compacted Rust (metal is where incendiary armaments didn't hit)
Metal for mostly steel with a bit of rust and chance to find random metal bits embedded in it.
Rust for mostly iron rust with a bit of iron and chance to find random bits of metal (including steel).
And then smelt rust into iron and iron into steel.
Just my two cents about iron and steel forming.
