If you want your unit cards to recieve their faction color (like red for Sparta) then you need to add a mask as well. Masks are found in the same pack as unit cards under ui/units/mask. You can export, edit, and import these the same way you did the unit cards. The name of the file must be the same as your unit card with _mask_1.png on the end. So for the previous example the mask would be Spartan_Royal_Pikemen_mask_1.png. You don't need to add any other lines to the files to get these to work as long as you changed the unit_card column in unit_variants.

If you are using Pack File Manager, then make sure they are in the same folder you extracted the original picture to, then do file->add->file(s) and select you picture. Then you have to add a line to db/unit_variants/unit_variants for your unit. Then in unit_variants change the unit_card column to the name of your unit card without the file extension. For example if your unit card file is called Spartan_Royal_Pikemen.png, just type in Spartan_Royal_Pikemen into the unit_card column. (continued in next comment)

Hmm, and how did you add the new unit card back into your mod then?

About 1/3 of the unit should have Corinthian helmets although its not reflected in the screenshots because I added the helmets after taking the screenshot.

I made the unit card by extracting the Royal Spartan unit card from the data.pack file that came with the base game and then edited the picture to have a longer spear.
