Better Starbase Economies

Description
Details

This is a economic rebalance for Starbases and orbital resources. It is jointly inspired by the approach taken to starbases in Stellaris Immortal and, to a lesser degree, by the approach to orbital deposits in Alphamod: Sparsity. It is designed to make your choices around starbases more consequential.

In essence this mod makes the following changes:

  • dramatically reduces the frequency of orbital deposits (by 50%). Many systems will have no orbital deposits at all. In order to assist the AI and to avoid slowing down the very early game, starting system deposits are unchanged;
  • introduces various Starbase modules which, when stacked, have the potential to dramatically enhance the quality of deposits;
  • introduced various Starbase buildings to further support and enhance those modules.

This mod is not dependent on, but is designed to be played with my Wild Space mods (see below). The level of orbital resources spawned and ability to scale these with Starbases is balanced as against a Galaxy where there will be less available "space" for economic exploitation.

GPM is listed as required. In fact this mod will work without it, but without the extra deposits and modifiers added by GPM the level of orbital resources will be considerably less than intended. Without its enhanced deposits, or those from other mods, you'll also significantly reduce one of the best bits about this mod - discovering particularly rich deposits spawned by rare anomalies, and knowing that you're now going to target that system for your main mining / research base.

Compatability

Compatability with orbital deposits added by GPM and Real Space is built in. If you have any other mods which add orbital deposits that you'd like compatability with, please post in the pinned discussion. Can't promise anything, but if I use those mods too, or it doesn't look too time consuming - I'll probably do it at some point.

Wouldn't advise using with anything that modifies Starbase buildings and modules. Will work with any Starbase mods that only effect the military strength of Starbases (i.e. compatible with At War: Starbases).

Support the mod

I do this for fun, absolutely no need to support this. But, as I've received a few requests now, if you'd like to support my modding donations to the link below are gratefully received.

doesnt work anymore due to guilli's planet modifiers being updated past this version sadly

Nice though I do think you should add that there are a minimum number of high quality deposits near your starting location. Otherwise this makes the amount of false starts obnoxiously high.
Also maybe a few more that can only be build around specific star systems to accompany the black hole observatory.

Does this work at 3.0.X?

Thanks. I should probably do something in this mod for the gestalt issue.

Do you find that it becomes overwhelmingly overpowered when combined with Starbase extended? I kinda assumed so...

Hey again!

Made another patch, now to combine this mod with Starbase Extended:

Hi! Made a quick patch to let this work for Gestalt Empires, which classically do not produce nor can they buy Consumer Goods. The Research Terminal (with 1 CG in upkeep) is problematic for them. I wrote a hack so they pay more EC and no CG, instead.

Do you think AI mods like StarNet AI would play poorly with this mod? I fear that a modified AI could have trouble using sparser orbital resources, or that starbase modules with vanilla AI weight values will destroy AI economies.

Well, yes, I am using tweaked mod Starbases Extended, up to 60 modules and 60 buildings per top tier base. However, other similar buildings that provide buffs have much more modest bonuses, or are limited to 1 per station.

OK. Certainly not the intent, and not my experience. Idea is that the starbase is powerful, but as you are capped you cannot have many, cannot use them for other purposes (shipyards, bastions, anchorages etc) and the number of resources should be way down. Perhaps you're just looking at your home system?

Should be renamed to 'Cheater Starbase Economies' :)
The bonuses are too high. 1 mining terminal = + 100% to all mining stations in system. 10 mining terminals = no need to build mining districts at all.
It would be possible to change the type from module to building in order to limit the amount to 1, and nerf the bonus to 50%. Otherwise it makes no sense, it's easier to add minerals through the console.
