DISCLAIMER:
This mod is provided AS-IS. I will try to support and improve it, but it is probable that I will only be able to follow it just a couple of day per month. Anyway, the mod is open source and everyone is welcome to improve and support it.

Info & decription:
The Real Fog of War mod aims to add a new depth to RimWorld, adding a new exploration phase and increasing the strategy difficulty.

It can be considered an "hardcore" mod.

Suggestions and feedback are welcome for better balancing and mechanics (limited to how RimWorld can be modded), but I will not add new game items (I'm bad at drawing and it requires too much time for me, but if someone want to contribute to the mod, he can submit a pull request on GitHub).

Features:
  • The map is initially unrevealed and must be explored.
  • Both player's and AI's humans, animals, mechanoids and some objects have and are affected by a Field of View, shared among faction components.
  • Animals participate to Faction Fog of War only if trained for release and with a master set.
  • Only things revealed by a Field of View can be attacked by ranged weapons; Mortars and similar weapons can attack unrevealed and unseen places.
  • Field of View of humans, animals and mechanoids is adjusted to sight attribute and are affected by darkness (mechanoids are immune) and weather.
  • Bionic eyes reduce the darkness debuff (one by half, two completely).
  • Standing and attacking humans, animals and mechanoids have a slightly increased Field of View as they "peek" in nearby spaces.
  • When attacking and not moving, the sight range is adjusted to weapon range over time (time based on weapon warm-up time and range).
  • Sleeping humans and animals have a base Field of View reduced to 20%.
  • At rough and lower difficulties, player's automatic turrets extend the Field of View in their target area.
  • Added surveillance cameras, to monitor an area (research required), and watch towers, to increase view range when colonist stand on them.
  • Works with existing saves, but the map will be unrevealed.

Mod removal:
If you didn't perform the surveillance cameras research, to remove the mod you should only destroy every watch tower built, then save the game and then remove the mod. You will get some MapComponent errors on game load, which can be safely ignored.

If you performed the surveillance cameras research, then you cannot remove the mod (you would need to manually edit the save file to remove any reference to the SurveillanceCamera research after destroying every mod related object in game).

Know and possible issues:
  • AI (enemies and colonist hunters) always know where targets are, but it can't fire to them if they aren't revealed by a Field of View.
  • Enemies can be shoot when they are not visible but just over the line of the Fog of War.
  • Some graphic overlay and mote can bee seen over the Fog of War (like the "hunted marker" and the sleep "Z").

Compatibility:
The mod patches some of the core game code to hide objects covered by the Fog of War and to apply the Field of View to the targeting and firing system, and could be incompatibile with other mods.

For the detailed list of affected game code, check the mod's post on RimWorld's forums (link below).

Additions by YAYO

- Wild animals shrouded in fog are also listed for hunt
- pawn's default field of view: 32 - 65
- Added sight buildings, parrots, and bells that can be used in the primitive era.
- Added a portable telescope that is good for invading enemy bases.

  • See if the the error persists if you just have this mod and its requirements active.
  • If not, try adding your other mods until it happens again.
  • Post your error-log using HugsLib and command Ctrl+F12
  • For best support, please use the Discord-channel for error-reporting.
  • Do not report errors by making a discussion-thread, I get no notification of that.
  • If you have the solution for a problem, please post it to the GitHub repository.

CAI 5000 seems to be different in many ways, including that it doesn't really account for light level the same way. Great if you just want a more dynamic combat experience, not so great if you're looking for that horror vibe (like I was)

@Siatru CAI 5000 is a better option as it has fully functional Fog of War, I recommend putting it to Easy mode or nullify the settings as much as possible if you're planning on using that.

Doesn't seem like the new one will be able update. If so, is there a possibility that this one will?

@JessieFeathers No, see notice at the top

Please do consider fixing the slow down, the other one added a much of buggy uneeded stuff which practically ruined it.
Maybe you can ask how he fixed the slow down?

Thank you to the uploader for your work in maintaining this mod and many others, but I recommend that people use のヮの's actively developed version of the Real Fog of War mod instead (as linked previously in the comments: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2560931731 ). Unless there is something you desperately need from this legacy version, the other option has interesting features and it doesn't suffer from this version's significant performance issues.
