Description
Welcome to Manic's Southern Portraits, the unofficial sequel to Manic's Northern Portraits that alters the portraits of the various Southern European/Mediterranean cultures. No more low-res, potato-faced Italians!

This mod affects the faces used for all cultures in the Byzantine (including Gothic and excluding Assyrian), Iberian and Latin (excluding French, Occitan, Norman and Outremer) culture groups. They all use recoloured Frankish, West Slavic and South Slavic faces in various different combinations while the Goths use recoloured German faces.

Most affected cultures continue to use their original selection of outfits, hairstyles and beards. Goths now have early, mid and late-game outfits. Early game, they use Frankish clothes and Byzantine headgear while in the mid and late game they use the full corresponding Byzantine set. Italians also use a modified set of Muslim beards.

Beards for the Iberian portraits have been adjusted slightly to better fit the new faces but are essentially unchanged. They're not perfect, but they're certainly a lot better than they otherwise would have been!

Along with new faces come new child portraits (previews above) for all affected cultures which have also been made utilising child portrait assets from more recent portrait DLCs.

French and Occitan characters now use Early Western European clothing in the early game.

Compatibility
This mod should be compatible with the Northern Portraits mod and can be run alongside this one. In future, I might consider releasing one big 'Manic's Portraits' mod that incorporates all the changes into one file.

So long as it doesn't alter the same portrait files, this should be compatible with most other mods.

This mod is savegame and Ironman compatible.

Potential updates
Things you can expect to be added to the mod in the future:
  • Late Normans use Byzantine clothes - The case has been made to me before that the Normans should use Byzantine clothes in the late game. They persisted the longest in Sicily (both in game and in life) and Siculo-Norman artwork regularly depicted their rulers dressed in clothing that is heavily influenced by Byzantine styles. As they have usually been culturally enriched by the locals in England (or France if Willie's conquest fails) by the 1200s, their new clothes likely wouldn't look out of place when the late game graphical era kicks in around this time. When it comes to changes, I'll likely try to combine elements from both cultures, instead of just assigning them Byzantine clothes.

  • Early game outfits for more Mediterranean cultures - Gothic and Coptic cultures don't use early game Byzantine clothes for whatever reason. Similarly, there are no early clothes for French and Occitan, making them look like smartly-dressed time travellers in the Charlemagne start date. The Iberians don't have any early clothing either but, probably because they use less garish colours, it doesn't stand out as much. Regardless, I'd very much like to give all the aforementioned cultures access to early clothing.

Recommendations
Here's a shameless plug list of some of my other mods that I'd recommend to anyone wanting to give the southern European cultures a little more flavour:
  • Manic's Byzantine Units - Adds new unit designs for all cultures in the Byzantine culture group for the mid and late-game. Designs are inspired by real-life artistic depictions of historical armour and weaponry.

  • Manic's Iberian Units - Adds new unit designs for the Castilian, Catalan, Portuguese and Visigothic cultures for the early, mid and late-game. Designs are inspired by real-life artistic depictions of historical armour and weaponry.

  • Manic's Italian Units - Adds new unit designs for the Italian, Sardinian, Dalmatian and Basque cultures for the early, mid and late-game. Designs are inspired by real-life artistic depictions of historical armour and weaponry.

Alternate downloads
For those who experience issues with the Steam Workshop and want some alternate download options, a .zip version of this mod can be downloaded HERE[www.dropbox.com].

To install, simply remove the two items from the .zip folder and place them in your CK2 mod folder.

If you want to use all of my portrait mods but hate all the clutter in your launcher, I recommend using Manic's Portraits instead.

Manic, your portrait work is incredible! I've actually been experimenting with them in mods I've been working on, one of them being a long-belated update of Jarls of India.

Or at least replace the "cloaked" middle loros with the later one, as mosaics and coinage show rulers like Constantine Monomachos and John II Komnenos wearing that specific type of Loros.

Is it possible to update the early and middle Byzantine crowns/Loroi to look as "shiny" as their late counterparts?

WHY DOES EVERYONE LOOK SO FLIPPING SEXY ALL OF A SUDDEN?!

UPDATE: French and Occitan characters now use Early Western European clothes in the early game.

@Mike - Thanks for your suggestions. Though, as you said, since the Portuguese and all other non-Castilian Iberian cultures will use these clothes, I'll probably refrain from adding any sort of kingdom-specific heraldry to them.

So, earlier last year i was planning on making a portrait mods to iberians, and from what i gathered looking at the sources i sent you and my personal aesthetic sense, the ones that would fit the most would be:
italian headgears 0, 2 and 3
french headgear 1
french clothing 1 (one recoloured with the coat-of-arms of castille printed onto them and another one recoloured in the pink colour matching the portrait from Juan I de Castilla)
I think the portuguese would need a proper separated clothing mod with no spanish heraldry, given it would break this mod's ironman compatibility

@DaVincix - Glad it worked out for you!

Yeah, it would be nice to have a more dynamic child portrait system. Perhaps something similar to the adult portrait one with three distinct 'stages' (baby/toddler - child - teen etc.). Unfortunately I'm almost certain that something like that is hard-coded and cannot be modded.

Everything in order now. No idea if it was really a non-steam file difference. However, enjoying now the complete improvement with your mod, the result counts. Btw., a nice project would be imo. to have more different child portraits, perhaps not the variety from male/females, but maybe 1-3. Or, a child (0-9 y.) and a teen 10-15 y.) portraits per child type.
