Description
Welcome to Manic's Northern Portraits, a personal modification I have made for the Anglo-Saxon, Norse, Celtic and East Slavic portraits that I've decided to make available to anybody who might be interested in giving them a fresher look.

Apologies for the inconsistencies in the Norse portrait previews. For some reason, Portrait Builder doesn't seem to like the modded Norse portraits and their facial features are glitched out and all over the place. As such, unlike all the others, the modded Norse faces were taken from in-game screenshots which have been cropped.

Contents
  • Anglo-Saxons (including Frisians and Old/Continental Saxons) now correctly use the English portraits in the early-game and now use German hairstyles. Because I thought the German beards looked a bit low res in comparison, Anglo-Saxon men still use English beards.

  • Men of the North Germanic cultures now use modified German portraits, as well as noses from the English portraits, with vanilla Norse hairstyles in the early game, West Slavic hairstyles in the mid/late-game and Finno-Ugric beards in all eras (I tried using their vanilla beards in the early game but they just didn't look right).

  • Women of the North Germanic cultures now use a combination of German and English portraits. Their vanilla hairstyles are retained for the early game, with West Slavic and Frankish hairstyles being used in the later eras.

  • Celts now use Frankish portraits for their genetics, with Western Slavic eyes, while retaining their vanilla outfits and hairstyles for all eras.

  • East Slavic cultures now use a combination and slightly modified version of the West Slavic and South Slavic portraits for their genetics, while retaining their vanilla outfits and hairstyles for all eras.

  • Mid-game Anglo-Saxons and Norse (including offshoot cultures) now use a modified version of the English outfits for when they reach the mid-game. All royal outfits, crowns and armour have been replaced with more culture-appropriate ones, while the vanilla English outfits have had their saturation reduced to make the colours look less garish and more realistic.

  • New child portraits have been added for all affected cultures, made from newer DLC assets to make them fit better with the updated faces. Anglo-Saxons and Normans now separate sets of child portraits, unique to the English ones, that look more genetically/culturally appropriate.

The unique, square imperial crown[i.redd.it] of the early-game Anglo-Saxons now carries over to the mid/late-game instead of defaulting to the English/Norman one.

The unsightly bald spots on many of the Norse hairstyles have been fixed.

Mod compatibility

This should be compatible with most other mods. The only potential issues that could arise would be if you attempt to use it with something like The Winter King or other mods that alter the portraits of the affected cultures. However, since this mod doesn't alter the vanilla game files, it shouldn't cause crashing and definitely won't corrupt your saves. Likely, the only thing you'll notice is bugged-out faces/clothing.

This mod works with with saves made before installation but, since it edits graphical cultures, you will not be able to earn achievements while in Ironman mode so long as this mod is active.

If you want to make the mod compatible with achievements, then all you'll need to do is delete the 'common folder in your installation (located in Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\mods\manics_northern_portraits.zip] by default). The Anglo-Saxons will revert to using their vanilla outfits and hairstyles, but you should now be able to use this in Ironman with achievements enabled.

Recommendations
Here's a shameless plug list of some of my other mods that I'd recommend to anyone wanting to give the northern European cultures a little more flavour:

  • Manic's Anglo-Saxon Units - Adds new unit designs for the Anglo-Saxons (including Frisians and Old Saxons) for the early, mid and late-game. Designs are inspired by real-life artistic depictions of historical armour and weaponry.

  • Manic's Scandinavian Units - Adds new unit designs for the Norse (including its various offshoot cultures) for the early, mid and late-game. Designs are inspired by real-life artistic depictions of historical armour and weaponry.

  • Manic's Celtic Units - Adds new unit designs for the Celtic cultures for the early, mid and late-game. Designs are inspired by real-life artistic depictions of historical armour and weaponry.

  • Celts & Saxons Use Wooden Buildings - Gives the Anglo-Saxons (including Frisians and Old Saxons) and the Celtic cultures (excluding Breton) the Norse/northern wooden building graphics along with new unique church buildings.

Alternate downloads
For those who experience issues with the Steam Workshop and want some alternate download options, a .zip version of this mod can be downloaded HERE[www.dropbox.com].

To install, simply remove the two items from the .zip folder and place them in your CK2 mod folder.

If you want to use all of my portrait mods but hate all the clutter in your launcher, I recommend using Manic's Portraits instead.

@Augustus - As far as I can remember, this mod has never been ironman compatible. As mentioned in the description, you have to delete the common folder to get it to work safely with ironman saves.

hi, did something happen to the mod? its not ironman compatible anymore

Update: Noticed that there was an error in the portrait files that caused old-aged Norse women in the early-game to have misaligned hairstyles. These should now be fixed.

I've also attempted to further improve the quality of the Celtic, East Slavic and early Norse hairstyles by sharpening them a bit more and increasing the contrast. I've also made them a little bit brighter so they should now match better with the newer hairstyles. For the early Norse males, this means their hair should now actually match the colour of their beards!

Alongside this, I've increased the sharpness and saturation of the clothes and headgear of the aforementioned culture groups. Combined, I hope these older assets have been brought more into line with the newer once released in more recent DLCs.

Hope you all enjoy!

Update: Carrying on from the new early-game Norse helmet, I felt that the Russian armour could also use a little love. As such, I've added a new set for them as well (previews added above). The designs primarily utilise West Slavic assets but have been altered to give them a more unique look. For history buffs that are interested, for inspiration, I used THIS [getasword.com] for the helmet and THIS [d2j6dbq0eux0bg.cloudfront.net] for the armour.

Hope you all enjoy!

@Navcus - Worked like a charm! I was only having this issue with Portrait Builder, the in-game portraits were fine on my end, but I've added the fix to the mod and hopefully nobody should have this issue in the future. Thanks!

Hey all, big thanks to all my fellow CK2 enjoyers who still use this mod. CK3 hasn't won yet!

Just a little update which I hope people will appreciate:

I don't know about anyone else, but I always hated the Norse helmet. It's very low quality and looks rather squished against the face. Then I remembered "Oh yeah! Paradox added a much better helmet design in Holy Fury for the Wolf Warriors society!"

So I've used it as the basis for a new helmet design (preview added to the images above) which Norse characters, male and female, will now use in the early game. It has been slightly modified to look at least a little different to the Wolf Warriors one, but it is essentially the same.

Hope you all enjoy!

Hi Manic! Thank you for the wonderful portraits; the Russian and Crimean portraits look absolutely fantastic now!

You mentioned that Norse portraits in the Portrait Builder are glitching out. Unfortunately, it seems the same issue extends in CK2 itself, for both the standalone Northern Portraits release and full bundle.

It's taken me a while to figure out the cause of this problem and if it's unique to me, but I've finally discovered it: your norse_male_offsets.txt and norse_female_offsets.txt were still following the vanilla norse portraits' offset settings!

Simply copypasting the contents of the vanilla offsets to the mod's offsets and assigning all values to 00x00 should fix it.

Thank you so much for your answer. I did it and worked. Great mods and thank you again!

@nemesis.96☠[TRK]☠ - Do you mean just their clothing or their faces too? If the former, then simply deleting the portraits_norse.gfx and portraits_norse.gfx files and the 'portraits_offsets' folder from the mod's 'interface' folder will do it.

If you want to keep their new faces, but make them use vanilla clothing in all eras, then you'll need to make some changes to the mod's code.

First, delete and replace portraits_norse.gfx with a copy of portraits_norse_early.gfx , making sure to rename this copy to match the original file name.

Then you have to open this copy with any text editor and remove '_early' wherever it appears (e.g. change GFX_norse_male_clothes_behind _early to simply GFX_norse_male_clothes_behind ). I recommend using Notepad++ as it allows you to easily find and remove all 70+ instances at once without having to do it all manually one by one.

Rather tedious, but this should be all you'll need to do.

Hello, is there a way to keep using the old stuff for Norse? i don't like the appearance of late-game for Norse. Thank you!
