Description
I don't have the VMF anymore. You can get it by extracting it with bspsrc.

What is rp_downtown_v4c_v2a?
rp_downtown_v4c_v2a (known as v2a from this point on) was originally a job that a server owner came to me with. After putting the first alpha build of the map on the server, the player count declined severely for the time that it was on because everybody wants to play on rp_downtown_v4c_v2, not some server-specific map edit. That being said, you can probably figure that this is an edit of rp_downtown_v4c_v2. The creator of v2 was a horrible optimizer, as shown by the fact that lower end computers struggle in more crowded sections like in front of the police department... And, you know, the entire map in general. I've taken it upon myself to optimize the map and fix multiple errors in it, and, even though I've only gotten to a2 so far, the FPS gain has been gigantic; FPS is at least doubled in front of the police department, even when it's populated.

Why are you doing this?
I'm doing this because of the fact that the original map was horribly done in terms of optimization... and the map itself is horrible according to other people, but I'm not concerned about whether it is or not with this project; it's currently the most popular RP map, so people like it. Long story short, I'm doing this to make it so that if people want to play on a map like that, they should at least play on the version of it that doesn't choke-hold their FPS.

Okay, so what are some changes in this map?
I'll be getting to that below, don't worry.

I looked down below and you don't provide a version of the map with the .bsp/.bsp.bz2, only the Workshop download. Am I supposed to extract it?
No, you aren't. I want people to add this map to their workshop collection, and NOT extract it, because of the fact that I'll be updating this map via the workshop instead of changing the filename. If you extract it and put it on your server, the map won't stay up to date, and you'll cause a ton of issues with people not having the correct map to connect to the server. It's not worth it.

But I want to make a modification to this map!
I'm fine with that, you just have to make the name distinct compared to this one. It shouldn't be v2b-z, since I may or may not use those. I'd suggest doing something along the line of rp_downtown_v4c_v2a_(clan tag). Send me a PM and I'll send you the VMF. Decompiling this map will result in a lot of brushes getting messed up since that's how decompiling is.

Well making textures nodraw isn't the best way to optimize a map. If you type in console "sv_cheats 1" Then type "mat_wireframe 3" You can see everything that the player has loaded. And from there I've placed a lot of occluders, and skip blocks. And it's improved fps a lot. But I still have a ways to go. Especially all the entities being loaded in the downtown area.

The more obvious changes I made were experimental at the time. The majority of lag on the map came from the bad optimization, in the form of the original author not nodrawing non-visible sides. For example, large amounts of sides of brushes that aren't visible to the user at all weren't nodrawed, so the client was rendering it all. This bogged down the FPS significantly. I took a considerable amount of time going through a lot of areas in the map and looking inside walls and brushes to find them, and I have no doubt there's more.

I just tested your map out, and the only optimizations that I see is two hint blocks, one in the downtown area and one random one in the three house area by spawn. I'm just wandering how you optimized the map other than those two hint blocks?

Bacon if you want to have the .VMF, extract the GMA to a .BSP using GMAD which is in your Garry's mod bin folder. Then use vmex (Which you can download online off of "Tophatwaffles" website) to decompile the .BSP to a .VMF.

Would appreciate the .VMF so I can do some editing on this one, if possible.

Are you still letting people use your VMF and edit the map?
