History:

17 April 1961 the US organized a clandestine operation to overthrow the Cuban communist government under the leadership of Fidel Castro using a group of Cuban political exiles called the Cuban Democratic Revolutionary Front.

This group organized with CIA support into Brigade 2506 and landed with the help of the US navy and airforce on the titular Bay of Pigs. Castro was tipped off that the landing was going to happen and thus quickly organized local militias. Brigade 2506 met stiff resistance from these local militias and couldn't push into the Cuban mainland.

When news came out of the illegal invasion of Cuba by US-sponsored rebels, critical questions were asked in the UN. Although the US delegation under Adlai Stevenson II denied any wrongdoing and where skeptical of the fact that an invasion was happening (because he was misinformed by his government), blame, accusation, and criticism quickly came toward the United States.

After the brigade failed to capitalize on the initial landing and the US got international pushback, US President John F Kennedy decided to stop the US air and naval support for the invasion, thus putting the final nail in the coffin.

After the failed invasion the US organized Operation Mongoose, a covert operation to overthrow Castro by sabotage, terrorism, and assassinations, including many attempts on Castro himself.

Cuba was convinced that it needed Soviet weapons to defend itself, including nuclear weapons. After the U-2 incident and concerns that Cuba would drift toward China, the Soviet Union granted that wish, creating the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Brigade 2506 is armed by the CIA, and they using old WW2 weapons.

-Republic of Cuba
Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces is armed with a match of US WW2 weapons from the US backed Batista dictatorship, Warshaw pact weapons quikly bought to defend the island with, and some western weapons also from the Batista dictatorship.

I include the weapons from the National Revolutionary Police Force and National Revolutionary Militia also in this faction, since they fought in the battle.

What if JFK or some other president didn't back down, but instead organized an invasion of Cuba? The United States Marine Corps have done military exersizes of an invasion of Cuba, most notably Operation Ortsac (Yes, that's Castro's name written backwards). In this scenario that actually happens.
