Roman Pilum

Description
23/10/2014 Another update! Now post marian roman legions can now fire two types of pila, the default type is more like a deadly javelin, with high damage and a range of 80. The other type, the heavy shot, has a much lower damage, and shorter range of 60, because it's heavy! And it takes longer to fire, again cos it's heavy. But the second type will significantly lower enemy unit melee defence by a factor of half !

Historially, I think the roman legeions carried two types of pila, one for shooting down enemy, the other heavy type to ruin enemy shields and make them defenceless, this update aims to simulate this! And legion ammo is very limited, so economise!

I suggest shooting down some enemy with the default first, then switch to heavy as they get closer, and rememeber to swith off heavy shot once in melee! First of all, because heavy shot has a minimum range, and also more importantly, friendly fire is bad, you don't want your own unit melee defence be halved X(

So feel free to give me some feed back on this update!

21/10/2014 I have updated this mod, now enemies hit by pilum will have a temporary melee attack and defence penalty, be aware of friendly fire though. This is just a test, tell me if you like this effect being added :)

This is really a personal mod, in fact, if there is any error, please don't hesitate to leave a note here, I'll be happy to improve it!

So, what this mod does:
1) The roman legions can now fire at will !
2) The range of roman pilum has been increased, for professional legions, the range matches that of normal javelin throwing unit of 80. The hastati has a shorter range of 60. Their ammo is also increased, I think the Roman army should be better supplied !
3) The roman pilum has a shock wave effect now, to reflect the fact that the pilum can knock out some enemy shields, and halt enemy charge, you can probably get three volleys into enemy ranks before engaging them in melee.
4) Once in melee, the professional legions now have the special ability of killing spree ( Hastatis and Principals don't have that), this special ability has also been greatly enhanced, weapon damage doubled for nearly one minute, and in that one minute, the Romans would be stabbing their gladius like crazy! Before they get tired.
5) In attacking testudo formation, I increased the shield block chance to 50 ! And unless my legions are being shot from the side or rear, they are pretty safe behind their shields.

6) Micellaneous: The accuracy and ammo for Roman siege engines are also greatly increased, after all, I think the Romans are really famous for their seige engines. BY the way, the accuracy for legions is now extremely high, so pilum kills.

And because this is a personal mod, so if you find anything you don't like, I'd be happy to change it, for example you may find the Roman army way too powerful now.

You can also change it for yourself ! In my mod you can find all the relevant tables for modifying missile projectiles, special abilities etc. Again, I am not an expert in modding, so if you know of better ways of making a mod like this, it would be great to post it to me.

7) Lastly compatibility: I am playing this mod with a lot of other mods, like 4turns per year, diplomacy lubricants, amazon reskin for steppe units, and a reskin for spartans as well. They are all compatible. In fact, I think so long as it is not an overhaul mod for ROMAN UNITS, it should be compatible. if you are using an overhaul for Roman units, you can find the relevant tables in that mod and change it accordingly to achieve the same effect of firing at will, etc.

Again, If you don't like my mod, help me improve it, thank you! Enjoy throwing Roman pila !

I know this is a necropost but it's so frustrating reading comments like 'they only carried'. How many arrows do you think the archers at Agincourt started the battle with? fifty each, how many did they fire ? hundreds each. The same kind of math works for almost every soldier carrying expendable weapons into action. A cohort in heavy action will use those held by the front lines, then either rotate the men or pass more Pila forward. Behind the lines is the camp or wagons with many more, constantly being passed to the battlefront where needed.
An Advancing unit held up by a well defended enemy will have many Plia passed to them . like resupply of hand grenades or machine gun belts or magazines of bullets. All the same thing. At Rorkes drift 100 hundred men fired over 10,000 single-loaded rounds fighting off the Zulu's. How to realistically portray that in TW is to have limitless ammunition all units, because it's too stupid to know if a unit is cut off from resupply

First of all, a big thank you to all my subscribers for your support! I have changed my computer recently, and I no longer have the editing tool I had before. Also, as my job now is taking a lot of my time, unfortunately I will not be able to update my mods as frequently as I would love to. So please consider my mods as open-source, and you can download it and edit it freely. Again, thank you so much for your support! I will still be around:steamhappy:

@Roger_Sartet I think Roman Pilum II is more realistic, and this one, Roman Plilum, will make the Roman legions super strong, and you can easily take on numerically superior enemy armies with Roman confidence. You can try playing the campaign on legendary difficulty with Roman pilum.

How can I choose between both Pilas?

A question. What is better? Roman Pilum or Roman Pilum II.

this mod is totally unrealistic far too much ammo more like a machine gun. im sure the Romans would of only carried no more than 3 pilums

I only see a "toggle fire at will" button...

@Finland's Famous Philly It's the same as other ranged units, there is an arrow botton at the right bottom corner when you highlight a unit, and click on it to choose the type the amuuntion to fire.

How do I switch between regular Pila and Heavy shot?
