Description
Compatible with 1.16
Mod version: 1.1.1
File abbreviation: vts

Veritas - Lifestyle Perks Overhaul is a complete overhaul of the Lifestyle perk system found in Crusader Kings 3 designed to encourage build diversity and to add exciting new gameplay options.

  • Veritas - Lifestyle Perks Overhaul overhauls all Lifestyles in the game and changes each Lifestyle from a perk tree style design to a perk chart design, giving the player the freedom to pursue only the perks that they want.

  • In true RPG fashion, all Lifestyle Perks now have actual skill requirements that must be met before they can be unlocked. These skill requirements range from 5 (Poor) to 25 (Excellent). This means that a character with 5 skill in Stewardship no longer has access to the same amount of Stewardship Perks as a character with 20 Stewardship, and so on.

  • Veritas makes changes to a total of 228 Lifestyle Perks, with at least 66 of these being newly added Lifestyle Perks.

  • Dynamic skill increase. A skill is improved every five years based on selected Lifestyle. Enabled with game rule. Disabled on default. Previously a feature of Taberna, this game mechanic has been moved to Veritas.

The content of this mod can be seen below.

DESIGN GOALS
  • Each lifestyle perk should feel impactful and special to unlock. No lifestyle perk should feel like a dead perk.

  • Further emphasize the difference between skilled and unskilled characters by introducing skill requirements to the game. Highly skilled characters should feel very different to play compared to unskilled characters, and vice versa.

  • Encourage build diversity by removing perk trees and instead adopting a perk chart style of design, where a character is only limited by their skill in the chosen Lifestyle. This is further reinforced by Lifestyle Traits now requiring a certain amount of Lifestyle Perks to be unlocked, an amount that is shared across all Lifestyles.

  • Minimise most sources of health and fertility to make the game more difficult, and in turn, more exciting.

  • Introduce more interesting choices to the game by giving Lifestyle Focuses positive as well as negative modifiers. Consequently, the cooldown to switch Lifestyle Focus has been reduced from 12 months to 0 months.

DISTRIBUTED PERKS

The following vanilla perks are distributed to every playable character in the game. These lifestyle perks no longer require perk investments.

  • Accomplished Forger
  • Bound by Blood
  • Mortal Adoration
  • Confidants
  • Carefree

Veritas makes changes to the following game files.
  • Every game file in the \common\lifestyle_perks folder.

  • 00_lifestyles.txt
  • (127_)lifestyle_focuses.txt
  • (127_)lifestyle.txt
  • (127_)lifestyle_perk_triggers.txt
  • (127_)lifestyle_triggers.txt

  • window_character_lifestyle.gui
  • hud.gui (Veritas only overwrites this to fix a minor interface bug)

Patches will most likely be needed when it comes to larger mods (AGOT, EK2) to resolve any compatibility conflicts. Putting Veritas at the end of your playset should resolve most of these conflicts however.

Mod is great but unfortunately I often find perk points missing when I inherit wih new ruler. I.e. game is showing 3 pers available but I only can spend 2 points.

When using a mod that adds new commander traits, the 'Strategos' perk in the Martial tree cannot be 'bought' because of the tooltip covering the screen. Btw, im loving this mod! Way better than vanilla.

Here's a list of things I'm currently looking to implement.

I would like to give each lifestyle an additional 10 lifestyle perks. This will require making the perk icons smaller, which could hurt readability. I'm going to experiment with this a little.

Some of the lifestyles could use another design pass. Martial lifestyle especially. Spoils of Man is pretty strong for being a 15 skill perk. Some of the later perks are a little boring.

I'm looking into implementing something I call "mission perks". These would be lifestyle perks with more advanced unlock requirements and separated from the skill system. These perks would also have more advanced but also more situational rewards. The idea being that they should help immerse you further in the lifestyle you have chosen, rewarding you for fulfilling thematically appropriate perk requirements.

I'm currently gathering ideas for the next major update. If you have any thoughts on the mod, feel free to share them. I can only make Veritas better with your help.

@cindercatz Thanks for the kind words. I may look into creating such patches in the future. I know people have long wanted a patch for RICE and Hiraeth as well.

@Soyut I'm not sure. Give it a try.

@finallyciv I saw your Quando Sumus comment as well. Nice work.

Love this mod. On the GUI issue, I've run Veritas and More Lifestyles together with the mod Scrollable Lifestyle Window, and it solves the issue for me. Load SLW later in the load order. ML is still in the vanilla tree style, but they work fine together. (I haven't played 1.16 with them yet though, just about to.) I would love to see a patch for them that converts ML to the Veritas style and maybe balanced them for it, if you find that interesting enough. Goes for all the other lifestyle mods, really. This mod's gold imo.

I want to use it with A Game of Thrones. Is it enough for me to just add this mod at the end? Does the AGOT mod add extra perks? Is there a need for a compability patch?

If I load your mod higher up in the load order, all the perk names and descriptions disappear, becoming blank.
Additionally, with your other mod, Hiraeth - Dynasty Legacies Overhaul, when it’s placed higher in the load order, the interface gets messed up.
I really appreciate your creativity and ideas, but the current compatibility issues make it hard for me to keep using them. I’m looking forward to your optimizations and improvements!
