Hoping this mod gets updated--I really miss being able to use steel foam in the right places.

@bearhiderug , I don't know if it's working and I'm not sure if I plan to update it or not. Currently, I doubt I will

@lilwhitemouse , the issue was solved, but for the sake of discussion;

It depends on how "stuffed" things are saved, which i haven't looked into. You'd need to delete or change all references to the foam item def and recipes, then change or remove everything made of the material such as walls, turrets, etc.

Depending on the xml format it could be difficult or super easy, but I've never tried to edit stuff material items before, only adding and removing items, bills, and research etc.

Most of the time it's easier to just remove the references ingame rather than in xml

What you can do is open a save game, use the "destroy everything" button in the debug menus, and create two things: a steel foam wall and a ...marble wall? Then save the game (to a different name) and edit the save file with your favorite xml editor. It should be relatively easy (as these things go) to find the two bits of wall, and you can see what you will need to do to change steel foam to marble magically.

@FloppyDolphins , If it loaded fine without the mod installed, it should be alright. I'd recommend generating a new map, preferably a city, just to make sure. But if that goes smoothly, then you're pretty much good to go.

Thank you for the help so far by the way.
TangerineSpaceRaptor 29 Feb, 2020 @ 6:52pm
That's true, removing mods is harder than adding them.

I did what you suggested and the game save loaded successfully. Is it possible that my save might get corrupted in the future from the mod being removed, even though it loaded fine? Or is it safe to save over the previous save files?
Honshitsu  [author] 29 Feb, 2020 @ 5:37pm
@FloppyDolphins adding mods is always easier than removing them... It may be possible to do save editing, but it would probably be quite difficult (best case would be a search and replace the steelfoam material with steel, but I doubt it would be that easy).

Your best bet would be to use debug & godmode to remove all steel foam items and replacing all walls with another material.

Make a backup or duplicate of the save, remove all steelfoam objects, replace all existing walls, save, disable the mod, and try to load. If it fails then you may have missed some. If the save is really important to you, I could attempt to edit it manually.

The RimCities mod I have is making the walls of the cities out of this material. Is there anything I can do to fix that? I'm not sure if I can un-install the mod as there is a lot of steel foam in my colony. I might be able to remove all the steel foam but idk if my world would get corrupted or not.
Honshitsu  [author] 29 Feb, 2020 @ 2:01pm
@lilwhitemouse , perhaps; originally it being metallic was a feature but I was kind of hoping mapgen and NPCs would avoid using it lol. If I was to make a revised version of this, it would likely be akin to sterile walls but using a non-stuff steal foam resource
lilwhitemouse 29 Feb, 2020 @ 7:58am
Actually, if you made it a "stony" material instead of a "metallic" one, that might keep raiders from having steel foam turrets?
TangerineSpaceRaptor 28 Feb, 2020 @ 5:17pm
A very cheap wall that isn't a material. That is something that would be useful, I'd use that if you made it.

Is it possible to update the mod to make NPC factions not use this as a material?
lilwhitemouse 27 Feb, 2020 @ 8:45am
Someone made a leather walls mod (so you can make tipis?) That may be more in line with "temporary walls."

I'm sorry to see it go; I think it's a fantastic idea for a spacer building....but if pirates are making turrets out of it, it does kind of present problems ><
zParticle 26 Feb, 2020 @ 11:12pm
Yes, a "temporary walls" mod would be great! Perhaps made from textiles or something.
Honshitsu  [author] 25 Feb, 2020 @ 8:25am
Due to the low subcount combined with how this mod doesn't really add much to the game and how the material is used frequently by NPC factions making them unfairly easy, I'll probably not bother updating it.

If anyone's interested, I may consider making a very cheap wall which isn't a material and hence won't be used by NPC turrets, etc.
megabot 12 Jan, 2019 @ 12:47pm
@bearhiderug more like random rocket launchers which fire 2 rockets per second and destroy a steel mortar in 2 seconds as well(orion isntalation, they didn't even have to use their tank)
megabot 12 Jan, 2019 @ 12:46pm
negative price...?I don't get what you mean with that, could you explain please?
Honshitsu  [author] 12 Jan, 2019 @ 1:31am
I think I may be able to make it player-only but not sure if it would work (also, price would be negative so it would mess with trading)
megabot 11 Jan, 2019 @ 10:24am
...is there a way to forbid steel foam for enemies?
pgames-food 6 Jan, 2019 @ 5:06pm
its actually pretty cool, i used steel foam to make some turrets that were placed in harder / slower to reach places, and they get enough time to fire off several shots, before maybe getting destroyed so they do the job...

plus, its also compatible with making jewelry rings with the Boots and things mod (or medieval mod) too :)
Honshitsu  [author] 8 Nov, 2018 @ 6:12am
Yep - i made it for personal use, mostly for structures where I dont care about fortification, and just want it to be fast and cheap. Like, the inside walls of a mountian fortress, for example.
CheeseAlmighty 8 Nov, 2018 @ 5:58am
I love it! You can make clean looking bases for fraction of the cost. Also really good starting material for custom scenarios and also camping.
lilwhitemouse 22 May, 2018 @ 12:02am
Hmm...I might think approrpiate a spacer-level research requirement (500, maybe? 1000?), as this sounds like really cool super-technological stuff?
Honshitsu  [author] 22 Apr, 2018 @ 6:37pm
I don't think there's any research (?) if there is it's easy. And, yes, there is an HP modifier which is consistent with it's material cost
lilwhitemouse 22 Apr, 2018 @ 5:58pm
Does it require any sort of research? And is there a HP modifier for walls made of the stuff?
Acker 31 Jan, 2018 @ 12:15am
i add chinese language into this mod,it is in the language folder.

I just meant that it fits in as a middle ground.
Frying_Dutchman 29 Jan, 2018 @ 8:22pm
did you know that injecting concrete mixed with a wide range water reducer (super plasticizer) into steel foam makes the concrete about 10x stronger? im a structural engineer btw

maybe you could make a material called 'metal concrete composite' or something?
Honshitsu  [author] 29 Jan, 2018 @ 6:11pm
@Reolos , correct. the surface area for heat transfer is lower. But rimworld works based on tile distance, not material type. But since it's cheap, it's more effective than an airgab and easier to manage than a 2 or 3 layer wall of a fully solid material.

@d_valroth , not sure what polymer you're talking about but;

I based everything off of the material used. 1:5 steel to foam ratio so the foam's hitpoints, weight, and value is 1/5th of steel. Because of it being light-weight, I made the melee weapon cooldown very short, but the damage sucks because of the assumed material properties (foam doesnt hold an edge well, blund objects will break easily and not be effective, etc)
d_valroth 29 Jan, 2018 @ 3:33pm
Still sturdier than the lightwieght polymer.
Reolos 29 Jan, 2018 @ 10:39am
The "R" value of an insutative material is directly related to how much air it holds. The looser an insulative material, i.e. fiberglass, celulose, polysotrianurate, the higher the "R" value. So, a foam mesh made from steel would have an inherently higher insulative factor than straight steel...
Tal'Raziid 29 Jan, 2018 @ 10:01am
i douubt it would insulate very well, considering the holes in the material
wjelk 29 Jan, 2018 @ 9:19am
good one
Deyon 29 Jan, 2018 @ 8:47am
maybe make it so it insolates very good! like in extreme biomes you could use a outer layer of steel and inner layer of warm steel foam (insulation)
Honshitsu  [author] 29 Jan, 2018 @ 6:54am
@daltonscats , it's just a light-weight construction material. Very weak, but very cheap.
Dalton RickmanT.TV 29 Jan, 2018 @ 6:47am
what is it for?
Deyon 29 Jan, 2018 @ 3:00am
cool idea, needs some texture tweaking tho
