Dang, I'm working on it!

I had to bail for awhile to get another project kicked-off (non-SE and non-gaming in general). The power tower all done and I'm fixing up the pictures. I'll have it out in the next hour or two. It'll be in three pieces: 1) the base module upon which everything is built; 2) power modules that can be stacked as high as you want to go; and 3) the top module. Everything is pure vanilla (no DLCs or mods), and all critical features are accessible without a jetpack.

The base module will be the only one that shows in the workshop, with links to the other two modules from the description and listed under "required items".

hmmmm workshop still at 299

Ya know you ONLY have 34 pages of creations. ;)

awesome

It's mostly done. I didn't like the low output of each 20-meter (8-block) high module, so I expanded each module to 22½ meters (9 blocks) high with an output of over 15 MW. (I needed the extra block height to give me optimum clearance between modules.) I'm trying to (excuse the pun) spiffy-up the appearance so it's not so plain looking. I'll try to kick it out in the next day.

I am eager to see this new design. I had to start a new game as the old one got corrupted after an update. Now I am ready to build a power station for this new game.

I keep ratcheting the design. My first power "module" had 12 wind turbines operating optimally for a total output of 5.2MW in a 20-meter high module (tested on the Earthlike planet). To be worthwhile, I realized I needed to expand the capacity per module so the tower doesn't end up being 200 meters tall. I tripled the wind turbine density per module, again all spaced to work optimally, and now get 15.5MW per module in a 22½-meter high module. Cool. Now a single module is equal to a small reactor in power output. This new design, although not as sleek as the first, does allow access to all components without a jetpack (which is important to me). I'm still tweaking things, though.

Your MK2 looks cool to me. But I do need it to be efficient as it will power my base shield.
Spaceman Spiff  [author] 31 Mar, 2021 @ 2:19pm
The trick is to make the modular assembly not only energy efficient, but "cool" looking. People will choose a vacuous design over a functional one any day.
Palladin888 31 Mar, 2021 @ 2:01pm
I think modular is the way to go. it give the player the chance to customize as they like. Also it would make repair and recovery soooo much easier.
Spaceman Spiff  [author] 30 Mar, 2021 @ 3:24pm
No, not 100 meters tall. Modular is an interesting concept. I'll have to consider that in the new design. Perhaps I could make each modular "chunk" with its own projector so they can be stacked and built in a consistent manner.
Palladin888 30 Mar, 2021 @ 2:18pm
How about making it Modular
1 - bottom
2 - middle with all the wind turbines
3 - top with defences and decoy

This way it is adaptable as to how much power it will produce.
Palladin888 30 Mar, 2021 @ 2:13pm
weeeelllll then you will have to Engineer a way to protect that rotor then huh :))

I plan to put the tower inside a shield... any chance you would design it to be no more than 100 meters tall?
Spaceman Spiff  [author] 29 Mar, 2021 @ 10:06am
True. Something to consider for my next design, although the weak link is the rotor; a small boy with a stick can cause the rotor head to separate from the rotor frame.
Palladin888 29 Mar, 2021 @ 9:09am
I guess so. You can still put it at the tip like a helicopter rotor and have two decoys. Maybe even armor them.
Spaceman Spiff  [author] 28 Mar, 2021 @ 6:19pm
I idea is to make the decoy the first choice for lightning strikes and hostile attacks. Shouldn't it be at the highest location?
Palladin888 28 Mar, 2021 @ 5:50pm
While you are redesigning you might think about putting a rotor bade at the tops with decoys at the ends of the rotor. Decoy will last longer if it isn't a sitting duck.
Spaceman Spiff  [author] 27 Mar, 2021 @ 2:34pm
Great. I'm working on a new version that compresses the wind turbines into a higher density which equates to less materials for construction for the same or better output.
Palladin888 27 Mar, 2021 @ 1:05pm
YAAAAAAA I can power by base shield with this sucker.

The minimum clearance of the mills from each other horizontally is 20 meters. No vertical clearance needed.
Power drop for every 5 meters - 25%.

Okay so here is the measurements:

For one ''pod'' (four windmills connected to a -thing-)

the base is 3x3
one windmill on top
one windmill on each side
theres a 5 block gap from the top of the windmill (the light thing-y) and the bottom of the next ''pod''

(Three sides are open, unless your ''support block'' is on the bottom of the 3x3, then you can have 5.)
Moon Truther 28 Dec, 2019 @ 3:09pm
i'll post the findings here for others :)
Moon Truther 28 Dec, 2019 @ 3:07pm
guess i'll spawn it in, take a look, and delete it. thanks.
Spaceman Spiff  [author] 28 Dec, 2019 @ 3:03pm
I don't remember. I played with spacing for awhile before I figured out the minimize distances, both laterally and vertically, to get the wind turbines to produce "optimal" power.
Moon Truther 28 Dec, 2019 @ 3:02pm
i just need a single ''pod'' of the windmills, not the spacing for the entire thing
Moon Truther 28 Dec, 2019 @ 2:57pm
What is the spacing?
