@Augustus - As far as I can remember, this mod has never been ironman compatible. As mentioned in the description, you have to delete the common folder to get it to work safely with ironman saves.
Augustus 17 Nov, 2024 @ 4:41pm
hi, did something happen to the mod? its not ironman compatible anymore
ManicMayo  [author] 5 Oct, 2022 @ 3:13pm
Update: Noticed that there was an error in the portrait files that caused old-aged Norse women in the early-game to have misaligned hairstyles. These should now be fixed.

I've also attempted to further improve the quality of the Celtic, East Slavic and early Norse hairstyles by sharpening them a bit more and increasing the contrast. I've also made them a little bit brighter so they should now match better with the newer hairstyles. For the early Norse males, this means their hair should now actually match the colour of their beards!

Alongside this, I've increased the sharpness and saturation of the clothes and headgear of the aforementioned culture groups. Combined, I hope these older assets have been brought more into line with the newer once released in more recent DLCs.

Hope you all enjoy!

Update: Carrying on from the new early-game Norse helmet, I felt that the Russian armour could also use a little love. As such, I've added a new set for them as well (previews added above). The designs primarily utilise West Slavic assets but have been altered to give them a more unique look. For history buffs that are interested, for inspiration, I used THIS [getasword.com] for the helmet and THIS [d2j6dbq0eux0bg.cloudfront.net] for the armour.

Hope you all enjoy!

@Navcus - Worked like a charm! I was only having this issue with Portrait Builder, the in-game portraits were fine on my end, but I've added the fix to the mod and hopefully nobody should have this issue in the future. Thanks!
ManicMayo  [author] 30 Sep, 2022 @ 9:09am
Hey all, big thanks to all my fellow CK2 enjoyers who still use this mod. CK3 hasn't won yet!

Just a little update which I hope people will appreciate:

I don't know about anyone else, but I always hated the Norse helmet. It's very low quality and looks rather squished against the face. Then I remembered "Oh yeah! Paradox added a much better helmet design in Holy Fury for the Wolf Warriors society!"

So I've used it as the basis for a new helmet design (preview added to the images above) which Norse characters, male and female, will now use in the early game. It has been slightly modified to look at least a little different to the Wolf Warriors one, but it is essentially the same.

Hope you all enjoy!
Navcus 22 Aug, 2022 @ 2:06pm
Hi Manic! Thank you for the wonderful portraits; the Russian and Crimean portraits look absolutely fantastic now!

You mentioned that Norse portraits in the Portrait Builder are glitching out. Unfortunately, it seems the same issue extends in CK2 itself, for both the standalone Northern Portraits release and full bundle.

It's taken me a while to figure out the cause of this problem and if it's unique to me, but I've finally discovered it: your norse_male_offsets.txt and norse_female_offsets.txt were still following the vanilla norse portraits' offset settings!

Simply copypasting the contents of the vanilla offsets to the mod's offsets and assigning all values to 00x00 should fix it.
nemesis.96☠[TRK]☠ 28 May, 2022 @ 3:41pm
Thank you so much for your answer. I did it and worked. Great mods and thank you again!
ManicMayo  [author] 21 May, 2022 @ 1:41pm
@nemesis.96☠[TRK]☠ - Do you mean just their clothing or their faces too? If the former, then simply deleting the portraits_norse.gfx and portraits_norse.gfx files and the 'portraits_offsets' folder from the mod's 'interface' folder will do it.

If you want to keep their new faces, but make them use vanilla clothing in all eras, then you'll need to make some changes to the mod's code.

First, delete and replace portraits_norse.gfx with a copy of portraits_norse_early.gfx , making sure to rename this copy to match the original file name.

Then you have to open this copy with any text editor and remove '_early' wherever it appears (e.g. change GFX_norse_male_clothes_behind _early to simply GFX_norse_male_clothes_behind ). I recommend using Notepad++ as it allows you to easily find and remove all 70+ instances at once without having to do it all manually one by one.

Rather tedious, but this should be all you'll need to do.
nemesis.96☠[TRK]☠ 15 May, 2022 @ 1:34am
Hello, is there a way to keep using the old stuff for Norse? i don't like the appearance of late-game for Norse. Thank you!
Kisigi 23 Mar, 2022 @ 12:31pm
I would say Late Celts could use a mix of french and english costumes and for commanders too
Arkturius 16 Mar, 2022 @ 4:03pm
Idk, in my opinion they are too vanilla. You can change german portraits on saxon atleast?
ManicMayo  [author] 16 Mar, 2022 @ 3:58pm
@Pycoeb - Sorry, I didn't see your post. I wasn't planning on making any changes to the German portraits. I often hear people say they look ugly, but I personally think they're alright. What about them do you find too simple?
ManicMayo  [author] 16 Mar, 2022 @ 3:55pm
@Orion - It's because I use custom char IDs to make various characters in my game look more historically accurate, or at least more like how they are commonly depicted in art. The version of Harold you see in your game is just using the vanilla char ID.

I didn't include these custom IDs in the mod because it would have created large compatibility issues with bigger mods like HIP and CK2plus, which heavily modify the character files with custom IDs/stats and traits etc.

If you know how to mod and want to make Harold Godwinson look like he does in the preview image posted above, here is the char ID I use for him:

dna=medjejoefcc
properties=aj00m0

If you're not sure how to do it, just let me know and I'll post a quick guide.
Orion 16 Mar, 2022 @ 12:36pm
Why do I see Harold Godwinson differently in my game?
Arkturius 11 Mar, 2022 @ 7:11am
Do you have plans about remake vanilla germans? Because their portraits are too simple
ManicMayo  [author] 6 Mar, 2022 @ 6:36am
UPDATE: Fixed a bug where early-game Anglo-Saxon characters using a different graphical culture would incorrectly display headgear_mid when wearing a helmet.
cauc 12 Feb, 2022 @ 11:08pm
I love how celts just look like hobos in vanilla
weathermod 11 Feb, 2022 @ 3:29am
@ManicMayo, oh thanks!)
Necrosavant 9 Feb, 2022 @ 2:50pm
@ManicMayo,yeah everything is ironman compatible, but sadly no matter if you choose only the portraits or the units, the achievments are getting disabled for some reason,so maybe if you can update it so i wont disable the achievments, that would be great! :D
ManicMayo  [author] 9 Feb, 2022 @ 10:20am
@Nachtkaiser - Thanks! My portraits and units mods should already be compatible with each other. If you're referring to the wooden buildings mod, I've recently updated it so that it should now be compatible with all my other mods as well.
Necrosavant 8 Feb, 2022 @ 6:17pm
Great work with the portraits and with the units,is there any chance to make everything compatible apart from ironman with achievments aswell?
ManicMayo  [author] 8 Feb, 2022 @ 4:59pm
@Cyberfeudal - I personally don't mind the German faces. At least they're of a relatively high production quality when compared to the faces in some of the earlier portrait packs. Unfortunately I don't plan on making any changes to them.

Saying that, seeing how you've also posted something similar on another one of my mods, I can see that you really want a German faces replacement mod. Since it's a very easy thing to create, I've made you a basic mod that replaces the German faces with the English ones [ufile.io].

It doesn't change clothing, hairstyles or beards. Other than Monks and Mystics, it doesn't require any additional DLC. It is compatible with most mods, including this one and my other portrait mods.

Hopefully this was the sort of thing you were after :)
weathermod 8 Feb, 2022 @ 12:04pm
it is strange that no one do something with Germans, they have awfull portraits(
Alatriste 5 Feb, 2022 @ 9:11pm
Yes I noticed that the common folder came back and redeleted it. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Cheers!
ManicMayo  [author] 5 Feb, 2022 @ 7:32pm
@Reynassanceman - You can still use it in Ironman mode, it just disables achievements. Nothing has changed though, it's always been that way. I admit that I worded it rather poorly in the description so I apologise if it caused any confusion.

If you want to use this with achievements then all you'll need to do is delete the mod's ' common ' folder. This'll make the Anglo-Saxons use their vanilla clothes and hairstyles again but it'll make it achievement compatible.
Alatriste 5 Feb, 2022 @ 5:36pm
What happened? Why is it no longer Ironman compatible?
ManicMayo  [author] 5 Feb, 2022 @ 8:31am
UPDATE: Just realised I was an absolute moron and that you can actually edit graphical cultures without having to copy over the entire culture file!

With this, I am happy to announce that the compatibility of this mod has been greatly increased. You can now use it with pretty much anything, including HIP and CK2Plus!
ManicMayo  [author] 2 Feb, 2022 @ 4:09pm
I've released a separate mod that alters the faces of a number of southern European/Mediterranean cultures which you can see HERE .
Anglo-Saxophone 21 Dec, 2021 @ 7:28am
Well, I think a Byzantine/Roman portrait mod would be great in general, Greek/Roman portraits are not the best really.
ManicMayo  [author] 24 Sep, 2021 @ 11:00am
@Anglo-Saxophone - That's a very interesting suggestion that would actually make a lot of sense. Ideally I'd prefer to add a new 'Siculo-Norman' melting pot culture to the region instead, but that's outside the scope of what this mod aims to achieve. I'll definitely think it over and consider adding it.
Anglo-Saxophone 23 Sep, 2021 @ 5:42pm
I have a suggestion for the Normans, well, late Normans, and that's for them to use late Byzantine clothing, you see, in the game, Norman culture is replaced by French culture eventually, with the only Norman characters left being those in Sicily, mosaics in Sicily at the time depict them wearing similar garbs to Byzantine emperors, such as the Loros.
ManicMayo  [author] 17 Sep, 2021 @ 12:51pm
UPDATE: Quite a few changes have been made!

- Clothing for mid/late-game Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavian men have been almost completely re-designed. They should now look even more distinct from their English/Norman counterparts!

- Vanilla Norse hairstyles for the mid/late-game Scandinavian women, which looked rather low-res, have been replaced with an expanded selection of higher quality ones, taken mainly from the Frankish and West Slavic rosters. This is to make them look more in-line with their male counterparts, who already use higher definition hairstyles. Celtic and Russian hairstyles, which look similarly 'outdated' remain unchanged, but I will consider replacing them in a future update.

- New, updated child portraits added for the Celtic cultures.

CONTINUED BELOW
ManicMayo  [author] 17 Sep, 2021 @ 12:51pm
UPDATE (CONTINUED):

- Added separate child portraits for the Anglo-Saxon and Norman cultures. Anglo-Saxons ones look a bit more 'Germanic' in their clothing and hairstyles, while the Normans use altered French faces. Child portraits for English culture remain unaltered.

- Mid/late-game non-imperial crowns for Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian women have been made a little less opulent, this is partly to make them look more like the ones used by their male counterparts and partly to make them look a little more unique since I'd originally just pinched them from other cultures without making any changes to the designs.

Previews of the new/altered child portraits have been added above.
ManicMayo  [author] 11 Jun, 2021 @ 12:31pm
UPDATE: Early-game Anglo-Saxon dukes and duchesses now wear a metal circlet instead of a fabric cap. This is mainly so the petty kings of the earlier start dates actually have crowns befitting their (petty) royal status.

Since duke-tier Saxon rulers now use the least opulent crown previously assigned to king-tier rulers, a new king-tier crown for both male and female Saxon royalty has been added. Previews of these new crowns are available in the early Anglo-Saxon screenshots for princes/princesses.
ManicMayo  [author] 10 Jun, 2021 @ 5:14pm
UPDATE: Added new child portraits for the North Germanic cultures (preview image added above) to make them fit better with the new faces.
ManicMayo  [author] 15 May, 2021 @ 6:11am
@NCCLW - No, but all you should need to do is delete the mod's ' common ' folder. This will mean the Anglo-Saxons will use English/Norman clothes and hairstyles instead, but it will make it ironman compatible.
NCCLW 14 May, 2021 @ 7:49pm
is it ironman compatible?
ManicMayo  [author] 14 May, 2021 @ 4:03am
@☧ Tony ☧ - Thanks! I'm glad my mods have made CK2 all the better for you.

I'm on holiday at the moment, but I'd be happy to offer you some tips after I get back on Sunday. Please do tell me more about your issue(s) and I'll try my best to help you :)
Ynot 11 May, 2021 @ 5:15pm
Boy oh boy! I love every single mod you've made for this game and THIS is one of the best, no doubt! Very good work there Manic!

Btw! I was trying to make a portrait mod like this, for romans, but I've failed. Would you mind sharing some tips for a noob modder? If you want I can tell you more about it!
ManicMayo  [author] 6 May, 2021 @ 4:48pm
No problem, I'm glad I could be of help :)

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately it's a little outside of my capabilities since it would require some hefty event modding (something I have absolutely no experience with) to ensure the artefact transfers to William (or Harald) and ultimately the Pope should Harold lose.
nickheadland 5 May, 2021 @ 2:39pm
NEVER MIND! I DID IT. HAHAHAHAHA YESSSSSSS! AT LAST! I've waited for sooooo long to change the english crowns. THANK YOU SO MUCH MANIC! YOUR WORK IS INCREDIBLE! If I may make one small suggestion as someone who enjoys english medieval history. Do a artifact creation. Specifically the banner of King Harold I. This was stated to be King William's prime trophy from the battle of Hastings. It was stated he sent it to Rome for the Pope's blessing of William as the new King of the English (not that the pope had much of a say in it lol). Just an idea. Keep up the good work my friend!
nickheadland 5 May, 2021 @ 2:07pm
Odd. Manic, your suggestion doesn't seem to be working. I tried to duplicate the files as you suggested. But the English retained their regular (DLC) crowns. I don't wanna beg, but if you could (please :) ), have a mod or send a file that would make the changes?
ManicMayo  [author] 5 May, 2021 @ 6:15am
@nickheadland - Thanks! All you should need to do is duplicate the .dds files in the mod's gfx\characters\english_male directory (except for the english_male_headgear_mid_saxon file, you won't need it) and simply remove the ' _saxon ' part at the end of the file name. This will override the vanilla headgear and give the Anglo-Saxon crowns to the English (and Norman) culture.
nickheadland 4 May, 2021 @ 9:51pm
I love the crowns! Is there a way to have the anglo-saxon crowns switch to the English? I'd really appreciate it. I hate the english crowns and would rather have the anglo-saxon ones, but I want to stay as the english culture for the game. Any help?
ManicMayo  [author] 26 Apr, 2021 @ 6:02am
I'll certainly consider changing the hairstyles, they do look rather low-res in comparison to the newer ones. Although I do think the female hairstyles look alright. I probably won't want to use West Slavic or Finno-Ugric ones though since they're already used by virtually all of their immediate neighbours.

Glad you like the Scandinavian ones. Personally, I just couldn't stand the fact that they all still looked like the cast of The Last Kingdom right up until the 15th century...
Lord Troutacus 24 Apr, 2021 @ 1:20pm
Hey, glad to hear it! Really love the look of the saxongfx so far. :D

A small recommendation is that the default Russian hair and facial hair is... well, it's not the proudest portrait pack in the game. Maybe try the Baltic hair or the West Slavic style.

(I'm a huge fan of your 1066 Scandinavians, they finally have some clothing and hair for the times. Superb mixture of gfx!)
ManicMayo  [author] 24 Apr, 2021 @ 6:39am
@Lord Troutacus - Glad you like it :)

I could lie and say that I deliberately omitted the common folder to 'make it more compatible' or something like that but... yeah, I just forgot. Should be fixed now!

Also, I've given saxongfx priority for the Frisians and continental Saxons so they should now also keep the new clothing when it transitions to the mid-game.
Lord Troutacus 23 Apr, 2021 @ 12:34pm
I added and modified the cultural file myself so I could use the modded saxongfx. Man, the hair and clothing looks great.
Lord Troutacus 23 Apr, 2021 @ 12:11pm
Hey, this is probably known but there is no common folder in either the Steam or Dropbox download so the Anglo-Saxons/Saxons/English are the basic saxongfx without the new hair or clothing. Overall the pack seems great though!
