I've also attempted to further improve the quality of the Celtic, East Slavic and early Norse hairstyles by sharpening them a bit more and increasing the contrast. I've also made them a little bit brighter so they should now match better with the newer hairstyles. For the early Norse males, this means their hair should now actually match the colour of their beards!
Alongside this, I've increased the sharpness and saturation of the clothes and headgear of the aforementioned culture groups. Combined, I hope these older assets have been brought more into line with the newer once released in more recent DLCs.
Hope you all enjoy!

Just a little update which I hope people will appreciate:
I don't know about anyone else, but I always hated the Norse helmet. It's very low quality and looks rather squished against the face. Then I remembered "Oh yeah! Paradox added a much better helmet design in Holy Fury for the Wolf Warriors society!"
So I've used it as the basis for a new helmet design (preview added to the images above) which Norse characters, male and female, will now use in the early game. It has been slightly modified to look at least a little different to the Wolf Warriors one, but it is essentially the same.
Hope you all enjoy!
You mentioned that Norse portraits in the Portrait Builder are glitching out. Unfortunately, it seems the same issue extends in CK2 itself, for both the standalone Northern Portraits release and full bundle.
It's taken me a while to figure out the cause of this problem and if it's unique to me, but I've finally discovered it: your norse_male_offsets.txt and norse_female_offsets.txt were still following the vanilla norse portraits' offset settings!
Simply copypasting the contents of the vanilla offsets to the mod's offsets and assigning all values to 00x00 should fix it.
If you want to keep their new faces, but make them use vanilla clothing in all eras, then you'll need to make some changes to the mod's code.
First, delete and replace portraits_norse.gfx with a copy of portraits_norse_early.gfx , making sure to rename this copy to match the original file name.
Then you have to open this copy with any text editor and remove '_early' wherever it appears (e.g. change GFX_norse_male_clothes_behind _early to simply GFX_norse_male_clothes_behind ). I recommend using Notepad++ as it allows you to easily find and remove all 70+ instances at once without having to do it all manually one by one.
Rather tedious, but this should be all you'll need to do.
I didn't include these custom IDs in the mod because it would have created large compatibility issues with bigger mods like HIP and CK2plus, which heavily modify the character files with custom IDs/stats and traits etc.
If you know how to mod and want to make Harold Godwinson look like he does in the preview image posted above, here is the char ID I use for him:
dna=medjejoefcc
properties=aj00m0
If you're not sure how to do it, just let me know and I'll post a quick guide.
Saying that, seeing how you've also posted something similar on another one of my mods, I can see that you really want a German faces replacement mod. Since it's a very easy thing to create, I've made you a basic mod that replaces the German faces with the English ones [ufile.io].
It doesn't change clothing, hairstyles or beards. Other than Monks and Mystics, it doesn't require any additional DLC. It is compatible with most mods, including this one and my other portrait mods.
Hopefully this was the sort of thing you were after :)
If you want to use this with achievements then all you'll need to do is delete the mod's ' common ' folder. This'll make the Anglo-Saxons use their vanilla clothes and hairstyles again but it'll make it achievement compatible.
With this, I am happy to announce that the compatibility of this mod has been greatly increased. You can now use it with pretty much anything, including HIP and CK2Plus!
- Clothing for mid/late-game Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavian men have been almost completely re-designed. They should now look even more distinct from their English/Norman counterparts!
- Vanilla Norse hairstyles for the mid/late-game Scandinavian women, which looked rather low-res, have been replaced with an expanded selection of higher quality ones, taken mainly from the Frankish and West Slavic rosters. This is to make them look more in-line with their male counterparts, who already use higher definition hairstyles. Celtic and Russian hairstyles, which look similarly 'outdated' remain unchanged, but I will consider replacing them in a future update.
- New, updated child portraits added for the Celtic cultures.
CONTINUED BELOW
- Added separate child portraits for the Anglo-Saxon and Norman cultures. Anglo-Saxons ones look a bit more 'Germanic' in their clothing and hairstyles, while the Normans use altered French faces. Child portraits for English culture remain unaltered.
- Mid/late-game non-imperial crowns for Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian women have been made a little less opulent, this is partly to make them look more like the ones used by their male counterparts and partly to make them look a little more unique since I'd originally just pinched them from other cultures without making any changes to the designs.
Previews of the new/altered child portraits have been added above.
Since duke-tier Saxon rulers now use the least opulent crown previously assigned to king-tier rulers, a new king-tier crown for both male and female Saxon royalty has been added. Previews of these new crowns are available in the early Anglo-Saxon screenshots for princes/princesses.
I'm on holiday at the moment, but I'd be happy to offer you some tips after I get back on Sunday. Please do tell me more about your issue(s) and I'll try my best to help you :)
Btw! I was trying to make a portrait mod like this, for romans, but I've failed. Would you mind sharing some tips for a noob modder? If you want I can tell you more about it!
Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately it's a little outside of my capabilities since it would require some hefty event modding (something I have absolutely no experience with) to ensure the artefact transfers to William (or Harald) and ultimately the Pope should Harold lose.
Glad you like the Scandinavian ones. Personally, I just couldn't stand the fact that they all still looked like the cast of The Last Kingdom right up until the 15th century...
A small recommendation is that the default Russian hair and facial hair is... well, it's not the proudest portrait pack in the game. Maybe try the Baltic hair or the West Slavic style.
(I'm a huge fan of your 1066 Scandinavians, they finally have some clothing and hair for the times. Superb mixture of gfx!)
I could lie and say that I deliberately omitted the common folder to 'make it more compatible' or something like that but... yeah, I just forgot. Should be fixed now!
Also, I've given saxongfx priority for the Frisians and continental Saxons so they should now also keep the new clothing when it transitions to the mid-game.
