Arthur GC's Hunting Grounds: Prey Overpopulation Control

@Vertigo Which animals on your map have higher population than the threshold you set in the mod settings?

Did you subscribe to mods that allow predators to hunt boom creatures (such as boomalopes)?

The default settings for my mod are 10 prey animals from the same species on the map, so if there are 10+ boomaloopes on the map, predators will start to spawn to hunt them, but they usually do not hunt creatures that explode by default (except if desperate, if I'm not mistaken), hence you need another mod to handle this, as seem in the mod description above.

Also, since the predator needs to be bigger than its prey, I'm not sure if there is anything in the vanilla game capable of hunting bigger animals such as Elephants, but since they reproduce veeeery slowly, this shouldn't become a problem. I believe T-Rexes from some dinosaur mods can hunt Elephants though.

My mod only spawns valid predators: if none is found, none is spawned.

So started to have an issue recently on 1.5. Keep getting bears spawning, yet they are ignoring the prey on the map (VE Animals: Gorillas) and just beelining into my base to setup shop until they are hungry and attacking my colonists/animals.

I currently have 5 bears just chilling right outside my base door right now. While the Gorillas, Elephants, Boomalopes, and Beavers keep expanding their populations. I am wondering if has something to do with Biome Transitions and Tropical Jungles as this is the first time since using this mod to have Tropical Jungles on my map.
Vertigo 3 Jul @ 8:47pm
Ah yeah that is an issue. I turn off the automatic home zone creation thing. (I forget if that is also a mod or a core feature) Every so often I double check my zone area if I expand in anyway to ensure the correct areas are covered.
Zeress 30 Jun @ 6:32am
Thanks all figured out the issue and solution. Though that predators unleashed sounds interesting.

The cats thing was really just an example. As it turns out my mistake was not realizing that disconnected zones, in this case Home, can still be pathed to each other. So for example, the cat would wander to the geothermal generator outside the base that is still in "home". I just need to design zones with that in mind.
Vertigo 27 Jun @ 8:03pm
@Zeress, I suggest limiting the cats and other colony animals that support it to a zone. (Granted I use a mod to get rid of the Pen mechanic) Most commonly I let pets roam the Home Zone while making sure said zone doesn't extend past the outer walls of my base. Of course I also keep a "Animal Hide" zone inside the main base proper when raids/predators are hunting my colony.

@Zeress may I suggest this work of art to keep your kitties safe?
Arthur GC  [author] 13 Jun @ 4:33pm
Hi @Zeress, I was updating my mods to 1.6 and just saw your message!

Yeah, adjusting predator targeting would definitely be outside the scope of this mod: it’d need to be its own thing. But I have to ask: why are your adventurous cats wandering so far from the base? 😄

What I usually do is set up a safe zone that stays within the base perimeter and assign all my more fragile pets to it. That tends to keep them out of trouble!

One mod that might help is Predators Unleashed. It tweaks predator behavior so they down prey and haul it back to their lair instead of instantly killing it, which gives you a window to rescue your beloved pet before it’s too late.

Hope it helps, cheers!
Zeress 11 Jun @ 6:58am
I know this is likely outside of the scope of this mod but I figured I'd ask anyways.

Any chance to adjust the odds of predators targeting colony animals? I swear these guys prefer to snipe my cat 80% of the map away over the things the are "meant" to hunt. That's obviously not a you issue and more of base game issue though haha

@Roque the Rogue There are a few, but I think the most popular one is
Wild Reproduction . Even though it doesn't say 1.5, it works fine without issues.

RimKeeper - Wild Animal Procreation is another one.
Roque the Rogue 25 May @ 11:41am
It boggles my mind RimWorld still requires mods like these to perfectly simulate ecology, now only to find a appropriate animal reproduction mod
Arthur GC  [author] 25 May @ 10:52am
@Realm Imp It's not a common occurrence, but it can happen in the vanilla game if they are too desperate for food and too far from easier prey.

Predators also avoid prey that are larger than themselves, except when they're desperate.
Realm Imp 25 May @ 7:01am
is it normal that wargs or other predators would attack each other instead of attacking bigger prey e.g. muffallo, horses, etc?
Realm Imp 24 May @ 11:44pm
oh i see. it wasn't a big deal just pointing it out. cheers
Arthur GC  [author] 24 May @ 2:32pm
@Realm Imp They probably spawned already pregnant but in the early stages of pregnancy, which is hidden from the UI until a few days pass.

I can safely say this mod has nothing to do with your mares becoming pregnant: The code doesn't touch anything related to that at all, haha
Realm Imp 24 May @ 6:05am
Just notice a group of mares (no stallions were in the map) weren't pregnant when I checked them now two of them are pregnant
Realm Imp 24 May @ 5:56am
will check it out. Thanks
Arthur GC  [author] 23 May @ 4:11pm
@Realm Imp I just released an update that should prevent this from happening again. Please check it out!

@emihead I just released a new version with the feature you suggested, please let me know if you find any issues :)
Arthur GC  [author] 23 May @ 1:14pm
@Realm Imp I'll deploy an update for this soon, thanks for reporting it :)
Arthur GC  [author] 23 May @ 1:09pm
@Realm Imp Hmm, I'll investigate the issue. I think the reason may be that they spawned too hungry and too far from an easier prey.

You can temporarily disable the 'Hungry Predators' option in the mod settings to prevent this from happening.

I'm coding a better algorithm for the game to select the location predators spawn, so they spawn closer to their designated prey, this will fix this issue permanently.
Realm Imp 23 May @ 7:29am
Uhh why are the bears just keep attacking other bears instead of the prey?
Realm Imp 22 May @ 3:05pm
Okay thats cool. Thanks
Arthur GC  [author] 22 May @ 1:09pm
@Realm Imp They usually stay for a while, but the vanilla game has a mechanism that forces them to migrate out naturally after food becomes scarce or the season temperature changes.
Realm Imp 14 May @ 10:12am
will the predators stay or migrate after thinning down the preys?
Arthur GC  [author] 22 Apr @ 7:33pm
@NihilRetnar, I'm happy you liked it :)
Arthur GC  [author] 22 Apr @ 7:28pm
Hi @Jirro, I'm currently playing with 12 Regrowth mods without any problem. Maybe you don't have enough prey on your map to trigger the predator spawning?

Is there any error being generated on your debug console?
Jirro 22 Apr @ 4:01pm
Hi! This mod doesn't seem to work with Regrowth Core grasslands. Not sure if anything can be easily done to fix that.
NihilRetnar 10 Apr @ 3:41pm
This mod made me cry tears of joy, thank you.
Arthur GC  [author] 7 Apr @ 11:33am
@emihead Won't be easy to implement but I'll run a few tests around this idea when I have a bit of free time. Thanks for the suggestion!
emihead 6 Apr @ 7:52pm
would it be at all possible to make the predators spawn on the same side of the map as most of the prey is? i have this giant herd of prey that keeps reproducing and all the predators are spawning next to my base and hunting my colonists
Arthur GC  [author] 5 Apr @ 10:16am
@☨Førgøtten☨, thanks! I'm happy you liked it :)
☨Førgøtten☨ 4 Apr @ 4:38am
amazing mod, ironically bringing much more life to the world of Rimworld

@Faenix, thanks!
Faenix 21 Mar @ 10:52pm
Wonderful mod, you have made this aspiring ecologist incredibly happy seeing more realistic fauna running around outside. Thanks fam!
Arthur GC  [author] 15 Mar @ 5:41pm
@Captain Failure Thanks, I really appreciate that you liked it!
Captain Failure 15 Mar @ 7:51am
Got this mod and it's great, this along with the wild animal reproduction mod are perfect together, probably going to use it in every run from now on
Arthur GC  [author] 14 Mar @ 11:52am
@velcroboy333 Hey, I’m always playing with your mods. Thanks!
velcroboy333 14 Mar @ 10:32am
Looks good! I've saved this for my next playthrough.
Arthur GC  [author] 13 Mar @ 8:12pm
thorman123456789 Negligible. The code is very lightweight, and by default, it checks the prey count only once every 0.75 days (45,000 ticks), and you can adjust this value in the mod settings if you wish.

In fact, I’d even say this mod improves overall game performance, as predators will consume more prey than the number of predators spawned, reducing the overall tick cycles spent on wild animals.
thorman123456789 13 Mar @ 4:22pm
What is the performance penalty using this mod?
Arthur GC  [author] 13 Mar @ 8:18am
@Inquisition Time! Only wild animals count as prey. Tamed animals won’t affect predator spawning calculations.
Inquisition Time! 13 Mar @ 1:07am
Does cattle count as prey?
