When you fire the detector, it will show all detected POIs, patrol vessels, drones, resource asteroids, ore deposits, and player structures within a certain radius of yourself. Objects further away will only show for a brief moment, while closer ones will be discovered and from then on always show on your map. Ones outside of your detector's scan range will of course not show up.
The range of the handheld detector is quite low, so it's likely there's simply no ore deposits near your location. Either explore around some more, or build a HV or SV with a detector.
I strongly recommend at least playing through the game's dedicated tutorial accessed from the main menu. RE2 is intended for experienced players so there's no real tutorial for it.
I wish you good luck developing the mod and i wish you happy life :)
Thanks for all you do, Ravien.
