A War of Whispers
Proper setup of Loyalty Tokens?
I'm new to tabletopsim and A War of Whispers.

I'm not sure the correct way to set up the loyalty tokens.

The randomizer bag is great, but those tokens can't go into your hand. So, if when we were setting up a game, we had to flip the tokens to see what they were. (And to update our hands to reflect what the tokens are.) Flipping the tokens exposed the tokens to everyone!

We agreed to simultaneously draw & place the loyalty tokens and to try not to look at eachother's boards. That worked okay, but I did see a couple of things.

What's the ideal "workflow" that other people have used? Have you used the blindfold feature? Is there some "secret peek" feature I'm missing?

Are the random loyalty tokens supposed to be able to go into player's hands briefly during setup?

(The version we played was the one last updated on April 26, 2020. Many thanks to the game creators and the mod creators!)

As someone with (too) many hours in Tabletop Simulator, it's easy to forget some players--especially newer ones--aren't going to know some of the tricks and keyboard shortcuts that help avoid these sorts of "virtual" problems.

TL;DR - ALT + SHIFT

Mouse over (don't click!) a card or object you'd like to look at and start holding ALT. A nice zoomed version of whatever you're mousing over will pop up. While still holding ALT, start holding SHIFT as well. This mechanic allows players to PEEK at cards without exposing them. That eyeball symbol that pops up over the card indicates when and which player is peeking; this prohibits cheating.

So to answer your question directly, the best way to do it is to just place the loyalty tokens randomly face-down, peek at them, and then arrange the tokens in your hand to match. The tokens in your hand are just there as a constant and visible reminder of your loyalty order; feel free to delete them if you don't think you need them.

Many helpful TTS mechanics are listed under the Help Menu (Menu > Help Menu). Hope that helps!

Thank you! I was looking for a peek hotkey like this but couldn't figure it out.

Another thing you could do is set up hidden zones, which are shaded areas where only the player of that color can see inside of the box.

Considered and we decided against it. It opens to door to potential cheating and accidental reveals when you're just manipulating things on the board. Personally, I also think it cheapens the look of the mod. The hidden zones have some minor bugs associated with them, too. I may still consider making individual, small floating zones above each Loyalty space. We'll see how it works.
