These scenarios are set in an alternate historical timeline, where a continuous state of threat and war has carried on past the 20th century and into the present. NATO and its allies have been facing warfare and violent threats in the form of terrorism, piracy and civil wars, as well as conventional warfare between major players such as China, the USSR, North Korea, and Brazil. The constant conventional and asymmetric warfare has led to a massive increase in military spending across the world, leading to much larger and powerful militaries than those that are seen today. These are comprised of ultra-modern equipment and previously cancelled projects and weapons systems. Other technologies and weapon systems of the 20th century were also mass-produced and can still be found in the front lines today due to the higher demand, leading to cold war-era relics fighting alongside and against modern opponents.
