Description
BBW Perch

Concept:
Coastal patrol and parcel boat

Why drive this boat:
= High speed ramming
= Handy for many jobs
= LTD (larger than door) parcel handling
= Stormlink compatible (?pcap 10)
= Good view
= Good early career progress to more wealth

Derived from the Magic School Boat program the Perch is named both for a tasty fish native to the designer’s homeland and for the way the pilot is perched in a high visibility seat. It has a high commonality with Magic using a variant of the below the waterline hull, powerplant and safety systems. This is also a “lessons learned” project applying skills and understandings gained from the Magic School Boat program. Micro-controllers from the Magic program come from the developers own creations, such as the engine control unit, and some already selected from Steam.
Perch is developed with less expensive electronics, no radar nor map screen, for a lower cost yet able to use gps and locator systems to navigate to rescues. Bridge space is available to facilitate installation if so wished.
Under the coastal classification the crew are expected to come to shore, primarily to refuel, limiting the needs for extensive crew habitation such as in Magic. Instead the lower forward hull is configured as a weather shelter zone, the “pit”, for a moderate number of survivors. This makes her well suited to passenger transfers and for any cargo that can be handled through a door.
In the default rescue arrangement crew bedding is available in the lower wheel house and in the back of the engine room. Medical beds could be exchanged for more crew beds. A mini-galley is present underneath the cabin ramp with a fridge, sink and a nearby heating element. A tea kettle is mounted in the lower wheel house for hot drinks while above deck. A toilet is fitted in the lower pit cabin with a rod for hanging privacy curtains.

A perimeter extension was made with overall buoyant material. A result is significant reduction in her tendency to roll.
For those moving through a career Perch should be purchasable after a few crates or missions. She is a good stepping stone toward using Magic which in turn handles a greater range of missions.

Commentary:

= As a branch aimed for a high seat with good visibility its fairly good at visual spotting of objects or casualties amid waves.
= The deck space is narrow yet manageable. Magic and Pike have more deck space for handling casualties.
= Casualties could also be left standing in the cargo cage.
= It was found that trying to make a sealed cargo area gave more headaches in part that the game would compute that area as part of the buoyancy until the hatch was opened. Also at this time the custom door sections seem 5x or worse out of scale in weight to a normal door. The necessary size of a custom parcel door had so much weight it was adversely affecting the ship’s trim.
= The cargo area is specifically designed with holes to avoid the buoyancy vs flood and instead to simply allow water to drain out the holes. Technically the cargo is still partially exposed to the elements.
= Divers and swimmers can get up the cargo ramp easier than fishing for the ladder in choppy seas.
= The ladder up to the pilot’s driving seat is more a decoration as the game doesn’t allow “f” grabbed items to be swapped and there isn’t enough head space to get a full character height to get off the ladder.
= In the bow there is a small compartment with windows used as a flood water catch in case of high speed impacts. The majority of such damage and leaking will be here. By limiting the size of the compartment, though it too may have some damage, the flooding of the large main cabin is reduced. For example having two inner bulkhead blocks leaking into the cabin is better than sixteen of the bow.
Once repairs have been made to the outside hull a push button drain can be used to spill the water out into the cabin where the bilge system will pump it out. Currently there is no access to repair the inside of the flood catch “at sea” and if desired would need the vessel brought back to a workshop for “repairs in drydock” (respawn the vessel).

Update, corrected microcontroller limiting helm as negative (port) was going through at full magnitude. Now both use limited magnitude as intended.
Being tall and small it is a bit tippy and this helps keep you from over steering.

Update:
Generators increased

Update:
Now using my Mk 3 Gyro stabilizer which uses the reverse gear setting rather than linear speed (which turns out is always positive never negative)

Update, minor
= Reorganized cockpit ergonomics to put map on the right side which is more consistent with my other designs and my own right handed instincts
= Two narrow angled windows worked in for slightly better forward side view for docking
= forward large boxes reorganized with a cable for the anchor and a second empty for holding docking ropes

Update
Based on play in a new campaign found/did tweaks such as:
= Side rails now have a gap for getting on/off docks easier
= Red/green side nav lights moved to high rear of pilot house as they tended to be lost in moderate waves
= heater for pilot house missing electricity fixed
= side rope anchors moved to match with new side gates

Updated to name seats in Stormlink fashion
Brygun  [author] 23 Feb, 2021 @ 12:17pm
Flashlight and empty (for recharging your current flashlight) box added to right of pilot seat under the binocular sets

Update
Given its growing popularity I've given the Perch an update based on a growing experience with the game:
= Working anchors, an appearance style on the bow ready for use and a practical thin stored in the back of engineering. Works at the now bow winch and the large stern winch
= Steering markers for side rails to assist in lining up with docks
= Helm limit by speed to reduce heavy rolls at speed
= Damage control board light blocks now labelled to type of warning
= Stern connectors for docking support craft like my Seal fuel rafts for more endurance

Im interested in feedback as Im planning some quality of playing improvements being brought over from other ships I've been using.
