Description
Arctic Pike:

Concept:
Near arctic packet boat derived from the dashing rescue boat Pike

Why use this boat:
= Starter dock size
= long range haul of handheld parcels
= Pike fun expanded electronics suite
= Durability against accidents
= Getting cold is fun, in a game
= Can do arctic trips with cruising range of 250
(gear alpha on beta on, 7 rpm with throttle ~75%)
= Stormlink seating for 6 (though 2 are exposed to outside temperatures)

>>

Feature tags:

Rescues, fire fighting, long range, cargo cage, fast, sleeping pod, durable, radar, radio, beacon locator, map, weather, windows

>>

Mass: ~3,800 units
Cost: ~$50,000
Fuel: 5551 L

Top speed: 60 knots
Gear alpha only
Rated on full fuel load

Cruising: ~185+ nm at 25 knots
Both gear alpha and beta
Throttle at full
Giving the ratio of dry mass to fuel mass the initial calculation is likely a little low meaning she should go a little farther

Works well with the Seal_ed Fuel Raft for additional ~30nm range:

= Anchor system for landing at beaches or islands
= Radar for impact avoidance in natural view of pilot
= Map display for long range navigation in natural view of pilot
= Onboard weather station for climate reports
= Radio upsized to “medium”
= Can get power to propeller when on side or inverted
= High roll recovery as a means to survive arctic storms
= Fully inverted can be escapes with wind speed around 80%
= Cargo cage upgrade for cargo mit with custom door hinge for more reliable containing of larger-than-door cargoes
= Modified fuel tank shape for higher capacity
= Winch downsized to save weight
= Pilot’s sleeping pod in bow with kettle and relaxation painting
= Pilot’s pod also serves as bow flooding catch
= Automatic heaters in cabin and engineering
= Solar panels installed for emergency power generation
= Emergency battery in engineering
= Audible master alarm with disconnect
= Pitch stabilizing assist
= Helm limit by speed
= Added forward spotlight pan-only alignment with fluid turret
= Cold outside visual warning by exterior door
= Doubled bow brace for ice (there are no ice sheets in game at this time)
= Wind sensor visible for assisting pilot to face into storms
= Spare arctic clothing (as it is mission critical a backup is planned for)
= Parcel handling ramps on stern
= Additional cabinets for supplies (represented as light brown blocks)
= Galley upgrade with mini-fridge, second heating element, kettle (decorative)
= Override to force on cabin heater to safe guard survivors you rescue

Commentary:
= Why base this design on the Pike?
Arctic transit will take ~200 nm range. The Pike types are low mass design so the engines have to push less.
= Range extension:
It is recommended to refuel at any place north of the Starter Base such as the Creative Base. As the game randomizes locations this will vary. If there is such a place head for it on the way back. The margins are slim and that is just safer. Also be wary of too much landing or beach movements in the arctic as they also use fuel.
Also consider using a fuel raft like the Seal_ed Fuel Raft as a disposable fuel expansion for a wider safety margin and maneuvering in-situ margins.

= Avoid handling cargo in high winds
The arctic winds are vicious. They blow around handheld cargo and may even blow it out of your hands. Worse is that the boat itself is being pushed. Use the bed in the bow sleeping pod. Sleep until the wind sounds are lower. Then get out and do what you need to. High winds can also trouble using reverse to clear the shore.
= Sea anchor, aka sleep, in storms
If storms are overpowering the boat with wild pitching the fuel is also going through a lot. Use the bed to sleep through storms. In real life a sea anchor is a large tarp like material put into the water that slows motion but as it drags the stern it naturally points the bow into the waves. In the game its perfect station keeping so its a bit of a roleplay to call it “setting the sea anchor”.
= Shut down for sleep:
Engine panic/manual trouble to on; nav lights to off; primary relay to off. If these are on the power will be slowly drained. If you do run out there is a small battery in the engine room, by the hatch, to connect specifically to restart.
= Lower power use Zero clutch
The zero clutch mode with minimal RPS (like 0.10 throttle) will run the generators for you to put in an extra 0.05 to 0.1 power. Use that to ensure a restart. While traveling cruise mode can hold battery level steady and faster speeds will charge. The zero clutch does burn fuel so use it sparingly. Also, there are solar panels which in daytime will help charge the boat. One solar panel is dedicated to only the emergency battery as a way to have it charged when really needed.

Quotes:

Exob
Q: Did you make the roof of the cabin look like a santa hat on purpose Brygun?

A: I didnt want to keep the same blue as the original Pike. And this one is capable of running engines upside down so repeated the white-red in the opposite direction.
