BBW Ranger Rex

The word “ranger” conjures up many images in the wilds, rough country and long dangerous journeys. These appear as fantasy heroes fighting orcs, the Rodger’s Rangers (a British expert in guerrilla warfare amid the pre-America colonies), his military descendants in Canada’s York Rangers or the borrowed teachings used by USA’s army rangers.

Among his famous list of instructions were #1 “Don’t forget nothing” then #2 was about having your equipment ready. As a Rescue Explorer, or REX, this ranger is ready for Stormwork’s challenges. Its double equipment both ensures readiness if one is lost or can be used for 2-person multiplayer. Note: that there is one sleeping bed and if a second is needed would need to make easy adjustments to the rear seating.

Ranger Rex can be spawned at railroad and hanger workshops recommending North Harbor of Sawyer islands to swap parcel to-from arctic-Sawyer and Rex handling land trips.

Divided into three there is the crew cab, the water bay and the rear passenger bay. The passenger bay has a medical bed, 8 seats, outfits and handheld gear. An additional 2 seats in the crew cab make it possible to seat 10 (Stormlink users use ?pcap 10) plus 2 more if the crew bed and medical bed are used.

Powerplant is a modular 12 cylinder design with dual pumped electric fan radiators. Its controller operates w-s forward/reverse, wheel steering, parking brake, over heat shutdown and pause on exit. Engine air comes by a roof snorkel. The driver will be underwater before the intake is. Fuel capacity of 540 L provides for long range driving and for the ability to perform refuelling missions. All wheels have suspension and power. Steering is all wheel or for towing front only.

Fire fighting has handhelds and a 1,400 L water feeding a fluid turret or manual hose. Refilling can be done at a fire hydrant (from a mod), drive into axle deep water or by using a manually placed pod. In fighting forest fires the driver can stay inside though the wheels may get caught up on the trees.

Additional search and rescue systems include a locator system; navigation map; searchlights including vertical and horizontal pans for uneven terrain; radio; outfits/handhelds for arctic, fire fighting, diving, medical and infantry combat.

Four medium winches give various options for recovery work and self righting. Additionally the rear ramp does double duty as a form of tow-fork potentially lifting up the front end of towed vehicles for ground clearance. Magalls are stored in the bow and as the water pods. The passenger bay can store multiple parcels. Dispersed small winches simulate the ability to tighten ropes

Ranger Rex is ready to cross the lands, fight invaders, deliver goods, dose fires, act as a mobile outpost and camping out. Loss of electrical power:

If possible coast to a safe area. To right side of dashboard are circuit breakers. Turn off main battery to avoid voltage averaging. Turn on emergency battery. Turn on engine. Turn on brakes. With brakes on rev engine to charge. While engine running first turn main battery back on and only then turn off emergency. Revved charging should start to charge main battery. Avoid steep climbs until charge recovered as that seems to drain power. If using mods with electrical car charging stations it is recommended to use one after losing the main battery power.

Self righting

Crossing wild countrysides and volcano slopes you may become flipped. Ranger Rex is ready to solve that hex!

If on the side:
Open the water bay doors. Inside the cockpit buttons on the crew door interior for use when sliding down a volcano toward the ocean, it happens. Outside the controls are on the side walking boards using two way buttons to be reachable from the vehicle topside or underside for when flipped

If on the roof:
Use a mag all, from the bow or water bay, connected to a walking board winch on the side. Pull the vehicle onto its side then follow the above.

Underway engine fire:

Grab a cockpit fire extinguisher. You’ll need to exit the seat to turn around. You should be able to put out the engine fire from here. Repair damage and investigate why. Engine fires begin around 115 C so check the temperature and let it cool down. Fire might also have been caused by underside impacts on weird terrain shapes.

Underway cockpit damage:

Cockpit damage can cause loss of steering, loss of brakes and lead to worse as you are out of control.

From the seat grab a welder. Using welder from the seat will repair the critical parts. Recommend stopping with the brake on as soon as possible. Investigate and repair the rest.

Engine shutting down over and over:

Safety systems should shut off engine at high temperature. As it cools a tiny bit it goes under and restarts. Best to just stop the vehicle as soon as brakes will get a safe hold. Let it cool down a fair ways before resuming. Constant restarts may drain battery.

Towing heavy object

The suggested method is if the towed object has wheels use the rear ramp in the horiztonal position. If there isn’t wheels or there are protrusions, like a submarine stuck on land, use the rear ramp dow, then back up and use the rear ramp to lift it.

In addition take the bow mag all out and hook it up to the rear winch. Use these additional magalls on the front or top of the towed object.

If struggling you can also use the water pods as additional mag alls on the side medium winches.

For towing heavy objects the center of the combined mass is going to be a different place. Therefore a dashboard switch is provided to disable the steering of the rear wheels. Thus no matter where the new center of mass is only one wheel twist is being applied. With six wheel steering the wheels might cancel each other out or behave oddly.

Skills for climbing a volcano

Climbing up to the lip of a volcano is very hard. It is suggested to save often as you reach various flat spots. Getting up still requires significant operator skill. Skills to practice include:

= From the driving seat using the water bay controls as these will flip you off your side onto your wheels. Without this there are places you can slide on your side/roof very long ways into the ocean to drown.

= From the driving seat putting out engine fires by grabbing a cockpit extinguisher and aiming around the bed. This works.

= Repairing the seat quickly as it controls having breaks. Again weird angle ground strike can damage the vehicle pretty deep. From the seat you can reach welder to the right or at your feet. Repair the seat and hit the brakes. Consider carrying a welder while you drive. If the vehicle is on fire deal with the fire first.

= Avoid steep V locations as you can get stuck in those on your side and not be able to flip out.
