---BACKGROUND
In July 1916, the BEF (British Expeditionnary Force) finally answered to the French's call for help to be finally part of the war, as the French "poilus" soldiers were obliterated by the Germans, at Verdun, for many months. On the 1st of July 1916, despite a powerful-by-its-unefficiency artillery preparation, 66 000 unlucky guys went ahead, at slow pace, along a 25 kms line long. Around 30 000 of them would have been killed during the first six minutes of the battle...

Tanks, mine warfare and airplanes bombing were experimented there for the first time, at a new scale. In order not to face the mistakes of their inital massive attack (made for breaking the frontline), general officers (English as well as French ones) ordered a long series of small scale, useless and deadly attacks, without serious preparation, over weeks. From September, winter climate conditions became awful, making the battlefield a freezing and muddy swamp. The battle started in Summer 1916 and ended around late December 1916. The English (+Anzac) and the French managed at the end to only obtain a 10 kilometers push of the frontline...

BIENVENUE de bon matin dans un cauchemar de neige mouillée, de relents de pyrite, de nuages de gaz de combat, de tripes, de cendres, de sang, de divers fluides corporels, d'insomnies, dans une forêt de fils de fer barbelés, de nids de mitrailleuses, de bunkers blindés et bourrés d'explosifs, de conserves de nourriture avariée et froide, de trous d'obus, de moustaches pointues, de casques pointus, de baïonnettes pointues, d'une vaste gamme de mines, de professionnels de la guerre de mines, et dans beaucoup de BOUE !!

---CONTEXTE
En Juillet 1916, l'Expédition Britannique en France (BEF) répondit finalement à l'appel à l'aide des Français, laminés par les Allemands à Verdun, depuis de trop nombreux mois. Le 1er Juillet 1916, malgré une préparation d'artillerie puissante par son inefficacité, 66 000 malchanceux s'avancèrent, au pas, le long d'une ligne de 25 km. Environ 30 000 d'entre eux auraient été tué durant les six premières minutes des combats...

Les tanks, la guerre de mines et le bombardement aérien ont été utilisés là pour la première fois, à une nouvelle échelle. Afin de ne pas assumer les erreurs de leur plans d'attaque massive initiale (censés briser le front), les officiers généraux (anglais comme français) ordonnèrent une longue série d'attaques locales, inutiles, meurtrières, pendant des semaines, sans sérieuse préparation. A partir de Septembre, les conditions climatiques hivernales devinrent affreuses, transformant le champ de bataille en un marécage boueux glacé. La bataille commença à l'été 1916 et finit vers la fin Décembre 1916. Au final, Anglais (+ Anzac) et Français obtinrent une avance de 10 kilomètres seulement de la ligne de front....
