Description
BBW Columbia Gen3

Columbia fits in the starter dock to give you many great abilities in a package that designed for efficient and fun play.

Operators have requested a deeper hull version of the highly capable BBW Columbia. This Generation 3 version provides that. It maintains the existing dense capability package in a hull that is slightly deeper (2 blocks). The extra displacement giving a dryer deck for operators.

A secondary result of the deeper hull is more head clearance on the lower decks allowing a second bed in the first equipment room. Solo operators could use the original bed as a dining table while team operators now have that second position.

For a more extensive list of features see the write up of the BBW Columbia 2022 refit. A short list of abilities include:
= Gen3 doubles the motors for inversion recovery
= operator efficient layout of systems
= cost effective operations
= inversion recovery
= various rescue and firefighting
= long range or dashing
= towing
= beachable and can often be pushed back into the water
= anchor capable of debeaching
= Electronics for: Map; Radar; Beacon handling; Radio; Rear Camera; Weather
= Passenger seating eight (#1-8) in heated pilot’s cabin; another three heated in lower cabin (#9-11) plus four exterior unheated on stern (#12-15) (set Stormlink ?pcap 8, 11 or in warm regions 15)

Mass ~4,850
Cost ~74.5 K
For max range both gears on ~150 km
For highest speed gear alpha off, gear beta on ~18 m/s ~35 knots

Efficiency concepts

The cost efficiency for this boat is designed to get many jobs down without being too heavy. Fuel is this games primary cost to operate. By “right sizing” you spend less fuel to get the same rewards thus a higher profit margin. Equipment like sonar was left out as for most missions its not helpful.

Operational efficiency is achieved by arranging things that critical and common tasks can be done with minimal movement. This applies to the layout of the dashboard like the big red button for manual shutdown of the engines which happens when ever you arrive at a rescue or at a hospital. Rescued injured people are easy to monitor from the seat or by standing and turning. With topside engines they are protected from bottom strikes making engine fires very rare, quickly noticeable from flame light coming through the rear pilot windows with a rapid response of grabbing a handheld extinguisher and putting the fire out from the pilot house door.

Many SW designs based on real boats have larger boats that in this real world are manned by crews of many people (four for UK rescue boat services). Not only are most people playing single player the multiplayer is often just one or a few people. Real world boats thus don’t translate so well. Columbia, like the other River series boats, are meant to be efficient single player boats in the Stormworks
“reality”.

Inversion recovery procedures:

Important:
It takes both the inversion motors and main engines to get the boat upright. The main engines even on purely starter motors will get forward motion going. This forward motion is then used by the roll stabilizers to complete the inversion recovery.

If outside:
= If outside swim to the door on the opening side, orange striping aides finding it.
= Quickly enter and close the door
= If needed done diving suite at the rear of the pilot house
= Preferably repair hull damage and turn on pumps. Light green is the pilot house which would take in some or a lot of water if you used the door.

When ready to upright:
= Locate inversion circuit breaker is orange and is in the centre. When inverted it will up center. When in the pilot chair it is down centre.
= Turn on inversion circuit breaker
= Start the main engines, throttle up as well

Inversion direction control:
= If needed you can change direction of inversion roll with a toggle next to the circuit breaker. Note it is hard to see when sitting in the chair but easy to see if standing in an inverted boat.

Deflooding

To manage costs and cpu load the deflooding pumps are manually controlled.
The pilot house regular pump is primarily for draining water that got in when you were using the door, especially if coming in when inverted.
The lower “bilge” pump is a large pump that supplys to the fire fighting turret and deck fire hose hookup. To use it for draining water be sure the seawater valve is closed or you will just flood the boat. After making the seawater valve is closed open the cabin valve and the large pump will draw the water from the lower crew cabin.
To get water out of the other lower compartments you will need to manually open the doors. This design choice restricts how much flooding can occur due to damage. It gives you more chances to keep the boat afloat, fix the damage and then open the compartments one at a time in a controlled manner.

Vessels in the BBW “river” series:

A theme of the Canadian Coast Guard was selected largely as this is my homeland of Canada with this series named after various Canadian rivers.

BBW Columbia Gen3
A slightly deepened hull for keeping the main deck higher above the water as per an operator request. This also gave more height below deck with room for a second sleeping bed. Now with speargun for shark encounters.

BBW Thelon
Thelon design began as improving on the Gen 3 to reduce slipping off the deck. Improvements continued to fully enclose the upper engine and cargo bay. It is now well suited to operating in arctic conditions with increased heating and durability. Armor and rifles for defence from wildlife.

BBW Yukon
Arctic adventurer high capability design. Three times the mass of the Columbia. Needs the larger boat dock to spawn.

@Semiramis and other fans
I got into SW again. A brain flash occurred on how to reduce slips and falls while still being able to spawn in the starter dock. Various other upgrades were added making it enclosed and suitable for arctic cold. It is presented as a new boat in the river series: Thelon

Feedback points are fine and useful. Design choices always have pros and cons.

My responses for you didn't fit in Steam's 1000 char limit so please look to the discussion thread "Adventures, tips and how-to"

First of all, congratulations for your design. I've been following you since the first version. With your permission, I will have some suggestions, I hope you will make your new designs with these in mind. First of all, the outer walking areas of the ship are very narrow, so I fall off the ship a lot. and the place where the crane is in the back is always submerged. the rear seems a bit too heavy, maybe you can fix this by lengthening the ship a bit. the lower part of the ship is magnificent, it would be better if the doors were electronic. I had a very difficult time managing the keys on the ceiling very confused. and the cockpit is too far from the driver. maybe some more screens around the captain. e.g. u-shaped. We look forward to your new designs. Good luck.

I am both happy and surprised to see this ramping up the subscriber numbers. This being without very fancy marketing efforts. Feels like it really speaks to its quality after the various generations of refinement. Love to hear of peoples trips in the Adventures, tips and how-to discussion.

To go with the Columbia, which doesn't need DLC, I've made a non-DLC Ranger Rex at:

Ranger Rex has similar excellent qualities for land operations that the Columbia has at sea.

Update:
= Major inversion recovery improvement through doubling motors and rearranging stern parts
= Text here details inversion recovery
= 2nd diving suit, 2nd spear gun etc added to lower rear store room to support 2 person play (or just resupply in long voyages)
