History:

Scared of the spreading of Islamic extremism to the Unions Muslim regions, the Soviets raided the Tajbeg Palace to kill Hafizullah Amin, one of the Communist leaders of the Saur Revolution, a revolution where the Afghan Communist Party took over the Afghan government.

Then Chairmen of the Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev did this because Amin ordered the assassination of the previous Communist leader and his personal rival Nur Muhammad Taraki, after the assassination Amin took control of the Communist party and thus Afghanistan.

Because of this assassination of Taraki. the already fragile status of Afghanistan became worse. The population and army lost even more trust in the central government, thereby becoming more supportive of the Islamic Mujahideen rebels.

To calm the situation Amin tried to slightly distance himself from the Soviet Union by trying to mend the relationship with the United States, whose relationship was horrible after Amin ordered the assassination of the US ambassador to Afghanistan: Adolph Dubs.

But because of Amin trying to mend the relationship with the US and his completely failing to stop the Islamist rebels the Soviet leadership under Brezhnev decided to assassinate Amin and coup his government, turning Afghanistan into a Soviet satellite state.

Hours after the Tajbeg Palace raid and the killing of Hafizullah Amin the Soviet Union intervened militarily to help Afghanistan to fight the Mujahideen, although the international community called it an invasion.

The military intervention turned into a quagmire, with different warlords under the flag of the Mujahideen rising up against the Soviets and the central government, turning the hills, mountains, and countryside into a deathtrap. This quickly turned into the Soviet version of Vietnam, but more chaotic.

The Soviet Union became stuck inside a beartrap, bleeding out.

Factions:

Communist
-Red Army
The Red Army was the official armed force of the Soviet Union. Better trained and armed compared to her allies and enemies, it still wasn't enough to destroy the Mujahideen. The Red Army decided to destroy the Mujahideen with overpowering firepower and terror tactics, this only succeded in turning more of Afghanistan against them.

-Afghan National Army
The Afghan National Army was the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (AKA the Afghan Satellite State). Good enough equipped but with poor morale, most soldiers only served for a paycheck. Some would sell their equipment or even desert to the Mujahideen.

-Spetsnaz
The elite forces of the Soviet Union (and modern-day Russia). Specialized in harsh climates and covert operations. They were quite effective in Afghanistan. Most significantly they raided with a special KGB group and paratroopers the Tajbeg Palace to kill Hafizullah Amin.

Islamic Resistance
-Afghan Mujahideen
Mujahideen is an Arabic term that broadly refers to people who engage in jihad, the Islamic holy war. The Afghan Mujahideen was an alliance of warlords, all fighting for their own ideology/religion, ethnic group, and power.

The most well-known warlords were the radical Islamic Gulbuddin Hekmatyar who led the Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin (abbreviated to HIG) and the more moderate Islamist Ahmad Shah Massoud who led Shura-e Nazar.

Generally speaking, the different warlords got support from Western powers and Muslim nations, although the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan supported HIG more. While Britain supported Ahmad Shah Massoud.

Egypt, West Germany, France, Turkey, Japan, and even Israel and China supported the Mujahideen.

Iran also supported the Mujahideen, but only the Shia branches, namely the Persian-speaking Shi*te Hazaras.
