The Alpine Front or the Italian Front was the frontline between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy.

Initially, Italy had friendly relations with Germany after both these countries fought the Austrian Empire in for the Germans in the Austro-Prussian War and for the Italians the Third Italian War of Independence. Later Germany would patch up their relationship with now Austro-Hungary, and Italy would follow suit. Italy, Germany, and Austro-Hungary would sign defense treaties with each other, laying the groundwork for the Central Powers alliance.

However, this alliance was built on weak ground since Austro-Hungary ruled over multiple Italian regions.
This and other reasons caused Italy to not join the First World War on the Central Powers' side.

But In 1915, after the Entente sought out another front against Austria-Hungary, Italy was successfully sweight to join the side of the Entente (France, Russia, and Britain) because of secret promises too that Italian land from Austria-Hungary and colonial holdings in the Treaty of London.

The war went horrible, ending in endless bloodbaths and stalemates, ending with both the other Central Powers and the Entente nations needing to back their respective country up with more weapons and soldiers. The Austria-Hungarians with massive German support would later manage to break through the Italian line, but it was too little too late. And the Entete and thus Italy would win the First World War.

For the Italians, it would be a mutilated victory.

These configs are set during the Battle of Caporetto (also known as the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo) and the aftermath from late 1917 to 1918.

This was when the Germans would join together with the Austria-Hungarians to break through the Italian lines but before the other Entente powers would send soldiers to patch up the broken line.
