Gorilla's Yeomen and Squire Rework

Description
Overview
Embrace the shining gems of peasantry! Gorilla's Yeomen and Squire rework adds a brand new unit in the "Foot Yeomen," peasants recognized for exceptional service who occupy a space between Men-at-Arms and Foot Squires. They come in two variants: by default, they carry longbows, giving Bretonnia access to a higher tier archer, and a melee variant wields boarspears. Foot Squires have also been reworked as a unit, being reduced in count but buffed in stats to make them better reflect their status as almost-knights. They can't be considered "elite" by any means, but they afford Bretonnian armies a better class of infantry. There's also a new variant of Foot Squires with swords and shields for a more defensive focus.

Units
THE YEOMEN
It is possible, but not at all common, for a peasant to commit a deed that deems him worthy of note by the Bretonnian nobility. Those that do are granted the rank of yeoman. Yeomen tend to be wealthy by the standards of peasants, possessing larger acreage and/or a business to provide some meager income, though they are just as heavily taxed as their less fortunate brethren. Though most yeomen would be quick to purchase a draft horse to show their newfound status, some among their rank would prefer to invest in higher quality equipment.

Some yeomen are so fortunate that they are able to join the retinues of noble knights. In times of peace, they will often accompany their lords on hunts, assisting them in killing great stags or monstrous boars. For this purpose, many become adept at shooting with longbows, often able to afford sturdier bows and heavier arrowheads than their lesser compatriots, to waylay the quarry of their lieges. Others train with the boarspear, shorter than a traditional spear but heavy enough to weaken their quarry long enough for a knight to strike the killing blow. They are just as capable in warfare, accompanying their noble masters in the field of battle much as they would on the hunt.

Foot Yeomen (Longbows)
-Longbow archer with armor-piercing damage.
-Vanguard deployment
-New Regiment of Renown: The Vintners of Bordeleaux, who have dipped their arrows in the most potent of Bretonnian wines, so strong that they can instantly plunge any enemy they strike into a drunken stupor.

Foot Yeomen (Boarspears)
-Lightly armored melee infantry.
-Spear unit with charge defense, no armor-piercing.
-Has contact effect "Weakening Spears", which reduces the weapon strength and armor-piercing damage of any unit they're fighting.

-Mounted Yeomen have also been reskinned!

THE SQUIRES
Children of yeomen who show exceptional promise may be pledged to the knightly house their family owes their allegiance to, and granted the opportunity to become squires. A squire cedes all ties to their families and whatever quaint belongings they may have. They are trained since birth to fight, to work, and to serve the knight they have squired to. A squire is a close confidant to his knight, a faithful manservant without failure. Any duty a knight needs done, a squire will do it - sharpening swords, polishing armor, re-shoeing horses, whatever his lord asks of him. On the field of battle, a squire will give his life to protect his liege - and if that is not enough, he will die to avenge him.

The dutiful service of a squire is noticed by the nobility, who call the squires the "flower of peasantry" - though a peasant is still a peasant. Still, a squire enjoys certain privileges that no other peasant will know - a knight may occasionally bestow a squire with any armor, swords, and shields that have been weathered beyond repair. While old and damaged, this "hand-me-down" equipment is of a higher quality than any other arms a peasant will have access to, and the squires cherish them greatly, for they afford them that quiet fantasy that they may one day be knights. The squires are closer to the knights than any other peasant, so much so that it is the dream of every squire that they may one day ascend to knighthood - a dream they will most likely never attain.

Foot Squires
-Armor level, weapon strength, melee attack, melee defense, and hitpoints marginally increased.
-Unit count reduced from 120 to 100.
-The default Foot Squires unit is renamed to "Foot Squires (Great Weapons)"

Foot Squires (Sword and Shield)
-Silver Shields
-More of a focus on Melee Defense than attack
-Solid lineholders

Compatibility
Explicitly compatible with my Bretonnia Tabletop Reskin! If you're wondering where the armored squires in one of the screenshots come from, they are from this mod.

NOT COMPATIBLE BY DEFAULT WITH LILY'S BRETONNIA OVERHAUL. If you want to use it with that mod, please use this compatibility submod.

If you want compatibility submods for total overhauls like SFO Grimhammer or Radious, I'm afraid I can't help you because I don't use those overhauls. Feel free to make them yourself though!

Most other mods should be compatible unless they affect Foot Squires.

I'd like to thank:
-Lily, a constant help in all my Bretonnia modding efforts, who also donated the unit card for the shielded Foot Squires.
-Dead Baron, another good friend who offered excellent feedback.
-Flimp from the modding discord, an incredibly talented artist who made the Foot Yeomens' unit cards.
-John Matrix, who created the Battle Weather Overhaul used when taking the screenshots.
-And last but certainly not least, the good people of the Skeleton Crew discord who patiently helped me with the many technical issues I encountered along the way.

Thanks for the swift reply, no problem. I'll also take the opportunity to thank you for all your work for Total War. I use most if not all of the mods you've made, they're really very good!

@AwDiddums: Thanks for the feedback! I haven't had a chance to play a full campaign with these yet so the balance may need some tweaking. They're meant to be roughly on par with Foot Knights and I tried to mirror the stats of the Foot Knights from the Old World: However I'm not necessarily very good at balancing and I may need to make some adjustments. I'll take a look at it and hopefully get a patch out soon.

I've been playing a Bret campaign with these as my main and found that they surpass 'Blessed Bretonnia' Foot Knights significantly (can also be recruited earlier, cheaper upkeep etc.).

This is just my opinion, but I feel the Foot Squires are a little overpowered. They are vastly superior to Men-At-Arms and pack-a-punch greater than Empire Greatswords (Tier III). A hypothetical Foot Knight upgrade of these units would be very powerful. Is there any consideration to nerf them?

Love the mod by the way which is why I'm posting this feedback!

@RIP AND TEAR: Thank you for the kind words!

@b074k: The mod has built in compatibility with the tabletop reskin, just make sure you run that mod first. I'm not going to add Polemen with shields though, plenty of other mods do that including, I think, one of Lily's.

Is it possible to add Polemen-at-Arms with Shields to the mod? and is the mod compatible with the tabletop reskin?

Nice changes Gorilla! I had also just realized you did the War Castle mod lmao, it's so good! It feels like such a fitting unit for the 'wackier' side of Bretonnia alongside the Grail Relique. Running your Bret reskin as well, Lady bless you for all of the goos Bret content

Just pushed a patch adding some of the changes recommended by @RIP AND TEAR. Thank you RIP AND TEAR!

@Eyebags.On.Fleek: Thanks!

@linkfire12: Thanks for your suggestions. I did just buff the contact effect on the Boarspears so hopefully that makes them more worth it. I'd rather not do stalk because then I feel like I'd have to add it to the longbows as well and that could make them pretty OP, but we'll see. I might rename them to Tuskgor Spears in the future, that's a pretty good idea.

I love the idea of a unit explicitly designed to trap enemies in place for cavalry. Eshin triads are maybe not meta, but they are one my favourite units due to how unique they are.

Boarspears are quite expensive compared to regular man-at-arms, so it might be worth buffing the contact effect to make units more vulnerable to cavalry damage. Stalk might also be worth considering. The increased movement speed and vanguard deployment are useful, but catching cavalry might not be possible without stealth.

Alongside the anti-large bowmen and poison arrow tipped ROR, this adds new tools to the Bretonnian roster without making other units obsolete. Only other thing I can think of would be a net throwing ability.

Shield squires could arguably overtake the lineholder role, but without charge defense regular peasant infantry still have a place.

Also, should they be renamed to Tuskgor spears ala Kruber? Perhaps that is too elite a category for peasants who are primarily regular hunters.

Really cool premise great work
Gorilla  [author] 5 Jan @ 6:32am
@RIP AND TEAR: Yeah, the inspiration behind the Boarspears was actually the Eshin Triads that the Skaven have. I wanted to make a more "offensive" spear unit that you might use for ambush tactics rather than defensive line holders. The contact effect was to make them more support-focused, they could tie up halberd units that otherwise you wouldn't want your knights charging into and effectively nullify them a little bit.

However in effect they're two flimsy to do any good. I'll try and release a patch later today to address what you've told me.
