Description
The Edge of Athel Loren

Bordering the Dukedom of Quenelles lies Athel Loren, the ancient forest home of the Asrai. Here at a small hamlet Bretonnians tend their fields keeping a watchful eye on the forest line. Some brave farmers and even knights have entered Athel Loren only to never return from the wild and untammed forest. Rumor has it that the Duke of Quenelles had ventured into the forest once for what seemed like a day, but emerged to find a thousand years had passed.

A small manor outpost has been constructed as a result of reports of boys and girls gone missing. Many powerful Enchantresses claim to have been taken by mysterious Fay Folk at a young age, while none of the boys have ever been found again. Thus, the people who inhabit these hamlets grow weary that the forest will swallow not only their families, but their homes soon.

Jerrod d'Quenelles, the Duke, has requested the aid of the King of Bretonnia to attack the forest menace.


Map Info

This is my second map keeping with a lore-friendly approach. This time I chose to focus on Bretonnia as it is being released at the end of the month. Something I noticed with CA's map's is there are no real representation of Bretonnian farmlands, let alone the Edge of Athel Loren. I decided to take both and combine them, using lore I've read and historical layouts of feudal towns to recreate a believable Bretonnian hamlet, as Bretonnia themselves are based off Feudal Europe.

The map pit's defenders in the forest and attackers in the open land below. There's a river cutting through the map, with a man made bridge (quite slim - can be used as a choke point) as well as several natural crossings. Also feautred in the map is a small Bretonnian town, a Manor/Garrison complex, and several fields and orchards. You'll also find that I have made use of the Wood Elf canopy trees to get that authentic Athel Loren look. I did have to sacrifice the fact that Athel loren is a close and dense forest, to make it more open and playable in the game engine. There's just no way around this as I have to take into account camera positioning and unit movement.

Best Way to Play

While AI battles are enabled and have all of their logic added to the map, I still believe the best battles will come from human opponents. Try defending certain area's with Bretonnia and have your Wood Elf opponent attack from the forest. Or perhaps you'll lead your army into Athel Loren to take the Wood Elves head on. There are defensive positions within the forest if you so chose. If you're going with a strictly vs AI game, the defenders will begin in the forest (updated in v1.2) and the attackers in the land below.

Final Thoughts
As always thanks for checking out this map. I have not made this campaign enabled yet. When Bretonnia is released, perhaps I will do so as long as it can be added to land battles and not just sieges.

@Heisenberg - first thing I would check is go into your warhammer folder and then into data. Check for something like "curseofquenelles03942039842304" (not those exact numbers). Second thing I'd do is unsibscribe, run the game, quit the game, and then resub and try that. I just made an update a while ago but I was still able to play the map. As of right now I'm not sure if everyone iis experiencing this problem or just you. Let me know if it fixed the problem. Also if anyone has issues with the map please post here.

For some reason whenever I select this map and try to play it Multiplayer, it changes to Doomkeep like if the file couldn't be used.

Any reason why this would be occuring?

@patrickfinzi not yet. I'm not sure how integretion works for wood elf outposts seeing how they can be anywhere. This would theoretically work as a wood elf outpost.

And it's updated! New deployment zones and swapped the defenders to the woods and attackers to the farmlands below. Enjoy the new changes!

Just a general heads up - the map is not updating for some reason, I am troubleshooting the issue and hopefully can have it resolved today.

Great map design! Hope you'll put the map in the campaign in the future!
